It is a charity event raising money for Child's Play! The more money that is donated, the more levels of various Mario platformer games they will complete, all streamed live over the internet. Last year they played for more than 3 days straight and raised $29,082!

Go back and finish 100% New Super Mario Bros Wii
So far they've beaten about 190 mario levels out of the almost 600 total they have unlocked through donations.
At 31.5k they'll need to 100% Galaxy 1.
Current *mini goal* is to get to 24k before 24 hours into the game as that was their "final goal" from last year and they want to see if they can hit that in a single day.
