          I mostly agree with that, with the caveat that Fred is an unreliable narrator by his own admission. He has a line when talking to the police about how he doesn't take pictures ... he likes to remember things in his own way. So everything in that explanation is from his POV, which may or may not be accurate. His wife (gf?) may or may not be cheating on him, but he is sure she is. The tapes they got every morning probably didn't really exist, but are a stand-in for the tape he did see of his gf.
          
          Of course he didn't really turn into the young kid -- that's basically a fugue state he has while in jail. And note how the picture gets all jittery and basically shakes apart at the very end as he's driving. My speculation is that's him in the electric chair, having basically been trapped in his own fantasy world since being put in jail, trying desperately to find a way to fix things, a way things could have played out better.
