Quick Take: Eschewing realism for arcade gameplay and an over-the-top style, this fighting game reminded me of mixed martial arts with some Mortal Kombat and Blitz: The League thrown in. It's still in the early stages, but it has potential and will certainly turn heads with its bold direction.

Between UFC Undisputed and EA Sports MMA, mixed martial arts games have it covered when it comes to simulation. Supremacy MMA aims to differentiate itself by focusing on arcade gameplay that has more in common with titles like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. The characters have exaggerated personalities and emphasize certain fighting style. The game's arenas are full of edgy touches that make sure you know that fights aren't taking place in a standard cage or ring. While the gameplay is too early to judge, at the very least Supremacy MMA will stand out for being different.

The action I saw took place in a dingy underground cage in Mexico. While some attendees were interested in the fight, others had their attention on the cockfighting outside the ring or the very buxom (and very naked) stripper swinging on a pole. The cage itself was dilapidated, held up by wood beams that made me want to go out and get a tetanus shot. The arena definitely had a different feel from a Strikeforce or UFC fight.

As for the combatants, one was muay thai expert and the other was a karate master. The other characters in the game will use different fighting styles, though the disciplines were not revealed during the demo. In the early version on display at E3, only striking and a single takedown were ready. The action appeared very fast and very crisp. The developers are emphasizing pick-up-and-play controls over something that requires time to learn like EA Sports MMA. Grappling will obviously play a huge part in the game, but that aspect of mixed martial arts wasn't ready for prime time.

I'm cautiously interested in Supremacy MMA. The feel is different and potentially fun. The striking is crisp and arcade-like. I like that the game is trying to be different. However, I want to check out the grappling and how well it blends with the striking before I get too excited about this game.
