John Cash Leaves id

Related Topics – Blizzard, id software, Quake 3 Arena

I've been hearing about this a few times through the 'grapevine' but just now got confirmation from the man himself. John Cash, formerly of id Software has left the company to work at Blizzard Entertainment on an unnamed title. Here is the quick email I got from John:

Yes, I am out here at Blizzard; just started work today.I can't say what I am working on. John Cash
In addition, Graeme Devine has made a .plan update about the departure of Johnny Cash.
John Cash departed from id last Friday to a new position at Blizzard. I'll let him fill you in on what he's doing there, but we miss his CTF skills already! We wish John all the best, and id looks forward to the forthcoming Diablo II beta copies.. :) Had to throw that in.

  • Just because an employee is leaving a company does not mean that the individual was not happy. We have no way of knowing what Blizzard offered Cash having to do with creative control or money.

Also, there comes a time with all jobs (at least jobs where you work for someone else) where you feel you have reached a stage where you are stagnant, or where you get too comfotable - and you know you have to leave if you want to keep challenging yourself.

id Software has no problems. They have had a development team that has stayed on for a very long time, improves their skills greatly, and are ready to face different challenges.

  • I have intercepted the following message between John Cash of idsoftware and some unknown person at Blizzard.
    The message reads:

smellslikeflowers@blizzard.com: "Hi hun... I miss you. *kiss*"
johncash@idsoftware.com: "I miss you too snookums... *hugs* It smells like ass around here."
smellslikeflowers@blizzard.com: "Ah... my poor baby. What can I do to make you feel all better?"
johncash@idsoftware.com: "Will you be my KillCreek?"
    smellslikeflowers@blizzard.com: ".........I Do."
    johncash@idsoftware.com: "See ya soon babe!"

It *was* a woman afterall. :)

  • Re: The people who think that id/Carmack is washed up or that there is nothing left to do.

It's true that hardcore ASM freaks are no longer very useful in the 3d programming market, however, Quake's genius was not the inline assembly, but it was, in fact, the incredibly elegant Visibility determination. That's what Carmack is changing in the new engine. the PVS visibility determination system was a bit of a hack, but it came of extremely well. It's true, the challenge is no longer rendering pretty graphics fast, the challenge has become not rendering polygons you can't see. Something Carmack has done amazingly well, it's easy to tell because a Quake level has so many polys, not onscreen at once, but in the entire level. That's what gives id games the trademark "complex" architecture look. Unreal's visibility determination was decent, but I think it was done better in Quake.

Curved surfaces were also no joke. Don't forget that Carmack also added all the features Unreal Tournament had. I think Carmack's got an engine or two left in him, but I do believe that the hardcore programmer's arena is less and less 3d graphics, physics, sound, and other arenas will become more compelling as video cards do more and more.

Ah well, That's just my .02.

    BTW: Cash was the shit.

  • You guys kill me. Busting on id because they are trying to make a buck. How quickly everyone forgets all the stuff id has given away to make our gaming lives a bit better. QuakeWorld, & the Wolf, Doom & Quake source code. Not to mention the countless hours of enjoyment we have all derived from playing the games we bought from them. I know I've gottem my money's worth!

I admit, it is nice that Valve & Epic are giving away mods like TFC or the UT Bonus pack. Valve _had_ to give away TFC... The user backlash that resulted when everyone found out TF was not going to be included with HL saw to that. Epic is, IMHO, trying to buy our hearts & minds by giving away the Bonus pack. It is the only way they can compete with id. There is no great altruism involved there, just economics & market share...

I know that for whatever reason (I do not understand this myself) that it is currently fashionable to bash on id, but I just wish people would think a bit before they start spouting off that "id sucks", or that Valve & Epic care morexԍ¤ 2 cents...

  • the Shack is such a wierd place to be.

Whenever the topic is 3Dfx, nVidia, or UT, the Quake supporters come out.
But whenever it's id Software related, all these people come and bash id software for Quake 3.
I thought the game was perfectly fine and ran great out of the box. Then, there are always people complaining that the game isn't finished. Then there are people who are so proud of warezing a game, like any of us really give a shit. Of course, we can't forget those who think that if they bought the game, they have a right to complain. While this may very well be true, they just refuse to admit that maybe they've made a bad purchase, and are blaming id. Read reviews or something, for heaven's sake.

I mean, if I bought Myst or Deer Hunter, I can't really blame anyone for the bad purchase except myself, right?

  • Just another case of rat's jumping off of a sinking ship. Quake 3 is not the tour de force everyone thought it would be, and that's due to id's unwillingness to recognize market forces, a la teamplay games and a "newbie friendly" interface. They're just stuck in their ways, which I assume all come down from Carmack. Besides, most of those guys have been there since day one, so it seems natural for them to want to try something else at this stage in their careers. Carmack himself said their next title won't have a rocket launcher, alluding to the fact that their last three titles have been extremely similar despite graphical advancements.

    Good luck Mr. Cash.
