Games for Windows Live Marketplace Adds New Titles, Puts Old Prince of Persias on Sale

22
The "Games on Demand" section of Microsoft's digital distribution platform Games for Windows Live "will soon be the home of day-and-date game releases from the industry's biggest names," the company declared today.

Alongside the day-and-date releases, which kicked off today with Ubisoft's Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands PC, the company will be adding more games to the online catalog, including those that don't utilize Games for Windows Live functionality.

To celebrate, Microsoft slashed the prices on two older Prince of Persia entries:

Over 100 additional titles are due on the digital distribution platform this year, the company boasted, with the day-and-day releases including efforts from 2K Games, Capcom, Microsoft Game Studios, Rockstar Games, THQ and Ubisoft.

Among the other titles added today: Age of Empires III, Assassin's Creed, II, Borderlands, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Max Payne 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. Thanks to Shacker taczbr for the heads up.

After the years long shaft Microsoft gave PC gamers, publishing one xbox exclusive after another and stagnating PC development by locking DX10 to the initially crappy Vista OS, I will return the favor to them and not give them any of my business.

I find it amazing that Microsoft segmented its own gaming market. Yes, it went into console territory, but at the same time, you'd *think* it would be in Microsoft's interest to have Xbox games running straight off of the discs in Windows PCs. Oh, and they're gonna take over the living room with the 360, except, that isn't the case. As soon as the Apple TV gets the iPad / iPhone interface, the world will lose it over Steve Jobs again, and Ballmer can um...I don't know, take his failed Apple clones to his stock holders? Meanwhile Apple stock soars through the roof. Yay MS?

Of course, if Apple TV with iOS penetrates the living room, then you can expect games to start transitioning over that way as well. Not 'gamer' games, but games for your average person, similar to iPad and iPhone games. Microsoft can't see past its nose. Good luck with Project Sh*tb*x in the Fall. Maybe your years late mobile phone release will somehow ( ??? ) take over the mobile phone market?

It's disappointing your reading comprehension is so low, because I think he has made some interesting points here. Apple fanboy or "real gamer" points aside I think he maybe right that Apple and even Google dont really think of microsoft (and maybe even Sony) as nearly a threat as say Nintendo.

His point about MS and it's segmented customers is especially interesting because it feels to me and a lot of gamers I know that if they combined a lot of them in one giant Live platform ( xbox <-> windows <-> zune, etc) they would have one large market and could probably sell ALOT more content ( games, music and movies). But ms is run by executives who i think only know the classic OS/Office markets and not the emerging mobile/gamer markets.

I agree with him though. BrandonMill's comment is a jumbled mess of ideas. I was always taught that you try to organize thought points in sections or even paragraphs.

What I did find funny is how many Apple fanboys always mention that recent news about Apple's growth yet fail to realize how narrow of a pespective it is of the whole market. I'll never claim to be a stock expert by any means, but people need to realize that this doesn't make Apple as the dominant company.

Some business IT sites like zdnet.com, who are no MS fans, even mentioned how this isn't indicative that Apple rules the roost like ignorant fanboys like to think. Apple does dominate some markets, but if you consider other factors like profits.

The new Apple TV is not coming. Steve jobs says selling another box is not what people want and he mentioned nothing about it at the WWDC.

Steve Jobs is smart enough to know not to take anything away from iPhone 4. One product at a time. He didn't mention anything about an iPod Touch 4, but you know its coming. He didn't mention the iPhone 4 at the iPad conference back in Jan. Didn't mean the iPhone 4 was any less coming. Its not like he decided Monday was the day for iPhone 4, had his boys whip out a prototype magically and instantly, then launched.

So I say again, Steve Jobs knows better than to spread people's attention between two separate iOS products.

So let's see. iPhones come out in June, iPod's in Sept, and iPad's in March. Mar, June, Sept. Perhaps an AppleTV in Nov-Dec around holiday time?

If they required Xbox games to work on all PC's the 360 would have failed by now. The games need to be optimized for their intended platform.

Who said they were required to work on ALL PC's? PC games don't even work on ALL PC's. No, what Microsoft SHOULD have done was develop a standard, required hardware spec that is inviolate and required to play a given Xbox game. When a new console comes out, said platform requirements naturally go up.

Microsoft would be able to set a required spec for their console and PC's, hardware manufacturers could then build PC's with the proper spec for playing said games, developers would not be wasting time spreading their ports across two unnecessarily disparate platforms, PC gamers would have the option to play install-less games, and Live would have been compatible across both of Microsoft's platforms. Microsoft would then have been building PC gaming up at the same time they built up their console success and they would have been offering publishers who traditionally do not release for PC the chance to not only release console games, but also PC games.

Over time, the PC hardware necessary to match the 360 would naturally go down in price, but so would the Xbox. In this way, Microsoft gives you two options. Do you need a PC to do lots of things plus game? Buy an "Xbox-certified" PC with the specs required to play Xbox games. Do you just want a gaming console with some HDTV gadgets? Buy an Xbox instead.

There's no need to guarantee all Xbox games work on all PC's. There's only the need to guarantee that with proper hardware, Xbox games SHOULD be compatible with PC's. They could be. Microsoft just would rather lock everyone into a walled garden of peripherals, consoles, etc.

This is why they gutted the PC gaming scene. For peripheral profits. They certainly did NOT help PC gaming when they left Gaming for Windows Live a joke, lured Epic away from PC gaming with tons of money, pulled Remedy off a PC port of Alan Wake, killed a lot of developers (FASA, Ensemble, etc.), and left all development of Live-like benefits to PC gaming to Steam.

If Steam had not integrated those features, Microsoft would never have seen the light and even attempted to bring them to PC. Steam is doing what MS should have. For this reason, I won't support MS's plans in this area. I'll support Steam. Too little, too late, MS. You had your chance, you blew it.

"PC hardware necessary to match the 360 would naturally go down in price"

Any fucking moron (yes, even you) can build a PC that "matches" a 3shitty for about £300.

            "Live-like benefits to PC gaming"

Yeah I'd love to pay for online play which has been around - for free - on PC since... oh I don't know... FOREVER

You're a fucking idiot, you're 12, shut the fuck up, kill yourself, yagshemesh, no u, epic fail, cry me your tears gypsy

Your an indiot. Project Natal is the iPhone interface for the TV. Apple could break into the TV market but it would be a tough fight. Microsoft has 19% of the current phone user market in the US while Apple has 28%. So they are not completely out. Android only has 9% but that will probably be 2-3X as high by next year at this time. The market can change very quickly. If they leverage Xbox Live mobile gaming on their phone and even release a unit designed specifically for gaming they have a chance to hold their current market share and maybe even increase it.

Exactly. I refuse to buy any game that forces you to use Microsoft Live Marketplace. So far I've only missed out on GTA4 and Dawn of War 2 but I stand by my boycott of MS games for windows.

I hope you didn't have your heart set on Fable 3 PC, because that's certainly requiring GFWL.

I imagine that whatever the plan is at Microsoft Game Studios for future PC games, it involves mandatory Games for Windows Live, most likely requiring Gold for online play. They're selling a service, after all!

GFW Live has free-to-play multiplayer. They got rid of the gold/silver distinction a couple years ago.

You did not hear ME on the Kotaku podcast last year making it clear to the gaming world that PC Live is FREE? I had half the internet having THROBBING HATEONS last year for that great piece of work. Kind of hard to rag on a guy who knows how to speak in public - and the bookend calls around mine only helped to me make my points better. And the best part - I am still right about everything I said on that Podcast too. Love it or hate it, truth is truth. And to the haters: remember I was the FIRST person (PERIOD!) to bring up the COD/MW Map Pack profit margins vs the money amount the "petition" supporters were stating with their efforts. After that podcast, every guy had their "COD Map Pack Profit" article up on their sites (HELLO JOYSTIQ!); but I was the first to mention it anywhere, and I have the Podcast to prove it...

          Back on Topic:

Games for Windows Live on the PC has been free for about TWO YEARS now - so GIVE. IT. UP.

You might have to pay for DLC, but you know what? That's not new anymore... everyone does DLC now.

GFWL - I do not use Twitter because I AM NOT A FOLLOWER.

congrats on speaking in a podcast. i like podcasts because 99% of them are mouthbreathers with worthless opinions who are too blinkered to realise that actual human society openly mocks them for being utter faggots with no life or prospects because they are stupid, ugly, fat, virgin nerds.

tl;dr noone cares you simpering little faggot, eat a bag of cyanide and fuck your mother because that's the only pussy you'll ever have seen/slithered your ridiculous mass through.
