Shack Benchmarks!

The thing is, the GeForce smokes the Voodoo5 in soo many ways it isn't funny. Also, remember that your athalon benchmarks are biased towards the voodoo simply because (AFAIK) the GeForce does not go into 4x w/FW mode on the Athalon (this is last I heard anyway, and there are some workarounds). I normally play at 1024x768, and my monitor does a nice 120Hz refresh at that rez. Any higher and my monitor drops to 75-80Hz giving some flicker/eyestrain. Some Voodoo shmuck is gonna say "Hey, the Voodoo5 smokes the GeForce at 1600x1200", totally ignoring that the Geforce smokes (or matches) it at everything below that res - go to 1600x1200 and you'll need a very HQ monitor ($$$).

I suppose that if the V5 is priced right it would be a definate buy for those wanting cheaper hardware. But if you want quality and speed, the GeForce is the ticket (not even to mention the GF2!!)

BTW: I've seen GF's (not GF2 tho) only about $80-$100 (CDN) more than the Voodoo4's, so maybe not that much more than a V5.

forst things first, I have 3 computers one has a rendition v1000 in it cuz its just for work. another is my game machine that has a geforce DDR in it. The 3rd I just built friday with the geforce2 in it so no, I didnt UPGRADE from a DDR to a GTS, I neede another video card and that was the best available Thursday when I went to buy a card.

As for the texture compression, I know how to turn it off in the game, my MAIN point (and sorry for not being clear enough for you to understand) was the color banding and crappy sky. I didnt build a p3-800 with a geforce2 to see color banding on the walls and a sky that looks straight out of Duke Nukem. And yes I like nice graphics, I also like great gameplay better but the graphics are nice too. I still play qwTF a lot for the gameplay but I have been playing more and more q3a lately, enough justify having a good a system as possible run it on. One of my friends has been after my current system for a while and I will probably sell it to him when I am satisfied with this one.

You have a geforce and play QW still too? Because with the 5.14(at least with the Win2k drivers) I have lots of funkiness in Quake1. Like sometimes teleporters and your gun will just start flashing. I think it is due to there being no way to turn off the compression that I can figure out anyway. So I am stuck using the 3.84 detonators for now. What drivers do you use?

I screwed up and grabbed a voodoo3 on the basis "voodoo 2 was a kick ass card"
Now that i see every thing in 32bit with my geforce ddr.. I'm MUCH MUCH more happier with it..
even if i hadda cut back to a p2 333 i'm still doing good on it now only if i had a processor to back this card up

I think people benchmark with Carmack's engines because, if you throw better hardware at them, they will run better, period. This is not something that can be said of some engines *cough UT cough*.

I get more FPS on a p3-650 GeForce DDR at 1024x768 with MORE things turned on (higher geometry) then steve gets on his Athlon 950 & GeForce DDR at the same resolution.

Something is obviously wrong.

Most of those graphs are stupid. I don't need to see the same shit twelve different ways. But thanks for the comparisons, Steve, I do appreciate them.

sTeve, something you didnt do that I think everyone here would like to see. Do some timedemos with the Quaver demo, since its in q3dm9, it would show how the memory on that v5500 can handle large textures. Also, I know 3dfx has their own compression scheme but do they also support s3tc in OGL?

There are man sheep. I flew down to San Jose this weekend and the Fry's there were all out of the GForce 2. I picked up a Voodoo 3 2000 for my godmother because the fucking Compaq she bought doesn't even have any AGP slots... damn they rip consumers off... AT least now she can play around in Need for SPeed out of software mode... she did the ooo and Ahhh I think I did about 5 years ago...

Ok guys, just went into the game, turned texture compression off did a vid_restart and went into q3dm9, guess what? Total crap out on the video, it looks like a Skittles rainstorm on the screen. Turned texture comp back on and shit was back to normal ( color banding but fine other than that). So, NO you cant turn texture compression in tha game to fix it with these drivers.

Steve, are we going to get some nice high res screenshots of the V5 FSAA and GF2 sometime? I apologize if that's already been discussed in this thread earlier.

So sTeve have you been playing with these cards or just benching them? I ask because I was wondering if the V5 5500 has a smoother "feel" to it than the GF2? I have an SDR geforce in my main rig (celery2 @875) and a V3 in my second PC (P2 350) and for some reason the geforce just doesn't feel as smooth overall (although the v3 sux0rs for online play). I get 126 fps in demo001 at the settings I play with on the Geforce, but when you are moving around you still feel a slight hitching or jerkiness occasionally. Do you know what I'm talking about? Does the GF2 do this too? I think it has to do with the way nvidia cards load/store textures maybe

The only issue i have with it all,(and I really appreciate all the effort sTeve), is that the geforce and geforce2 can have issues with Athlon systems and I'd really like to see a Coppermine set of benchmarks at 950mhz.
