Publisher Activision has unveiled the first hard-rockin' batch of songs from Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, as well as releasing a teaser trailer for Neversoft and Vicarious Visions' rhythm game sequel which was previously known as Guitar Hero 6.

Warriors of Rock "will once again redefine music gaming," Activision claims, with a "completely redesigned rock-inspired guitar controller," 'Quickplay+' challenges and a "story-driven" Quest Mode starring Gene Simmons as "the Demi-God of Rock."

Players will embark upon a "larger-than-life, epic rock journey" from a New York punk club to "molten lava fields of rock treachery," transforming into "rock warriors" with "unique, game-changing powers" to help the KISS bassist "save rock n' roll." Right then.

An impressive track list will be required to make up for Gene Simmons' presence but WoR is doing well so far. Artists revealed today include Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Megadeth, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Slayer, ZZ Top and a lot of 'young people music.' The first of Warriors of Rock's "more than 90 tracks" to be confirmed are listed below.

  1. AFI - "Dancing Through Sunday"
  2. Avenged Sevenfold - "Bat Country"
  3. Black Sabbath - "Children Of The Grave"
  4. Buzzcocks - "What Do I Get?"
  5. Children Of Bodom - "If You Want Peace... Prepare For War"
  6. The Cure - "Fascination Street"
  7. Def Leppard - "Pour Some Sugar On Me (Live)"
  8. Dethklok - "Bloodlines"
  9. DragonForce - "Fury of the Storm"
  10. Drowning Pool - "Bodies"
  11. Foo Fighters - "No Way Back"
  12. Foreigner - "Feels Like The First Time"
  13. Jane's Addiction - "Been Caught Stealing"
  14. KISS - "Love Gun"
  15. Megadeth - "Sudden Death"
  16. Metallica & Ozzy Osbourne - "Paranoid (Live)"
  17. Muse - "Uprising"
  18. My Chemical Romance - "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)"
  19. Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody"
  20. Rammstein - "Waidmanns Heil"
  21. The Rolling Stones - "Stray Cat Blues"
  22. Silversun Pickups - "There's No Secrets This Year"
  23. Slayer - "Chemical Warfare"
  24. ZZ Top - "Sharp Dressed Man (Live)"

The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii title's release date has yet to be confirmed, though retailers Activision links to state that Warriors of Rock will arrive on September 21.

Man, I know it's all subjective but this just shows how far ahead Rock Band is in terms of music selection. This list is alright, but even compared to past GH games, it kinda sucks.

I think the GH game music selections are designed to appeal to the masses. Look at how many of these songs were mainstream radio staples. Look at how many of these songs were on extreme movie trailers.

RB music selections are more aligned with music enthusiasts. It explains why there's fewer games but more DLC and "installable" expansions. It also explains why it sells less than the GH series.

NOTE that I'm not saying appealing to the masses is wrong. I didn't mean to come off as some music snob. I'm just saying that the GH selections always seem like they come from corporate deals whereas the RB selections always seem to be done by people genuinely interested in the music scene. This is why you won't (often) find bands like KISS or Metallica or Van Halen on RB.

Also, consider that GH has a much larger fan base in Europe relative to RB than in America. GH4/5 were geared towards a more international audience, and while the songs here aren't as varied yet, they definitely aren't a full American experience.

I will say that everything I've read to date on WoR (what a lame time) says they're trying to rejunvinate the brand to be "guitar" hero (the rumors persist we'll see Band Hero 2 later this year to allow the less shred-y tracks for full party enjoyment). Still don't like the directions the visuals have taken since Neversoft took over, but...
