Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Jun 04, 2010 5:00am PDTDefense Grid's 99¢ two-map DLC packs are just the sort of downloadable content I like to see. I picked up the first pack last night, gave one of the maps a bash and was happy with the entertainment I received for pocket change. Tonight I'll work on the other and have a jolly good time. Marvellous.
Of course, Defense Grid is able to do this because it's split into separate, unrelated levels. With games such as Fallout 3, Borderlands or Oblivion, more expansive--and expensive--DLC makes the most sense. However, I always find it offputting to know $30 of DLC will soon be released for my brand new $40 game. I waited for Game of the Year editions before buying Oblivion and Fallout 3, and plan to do the same for Borderlands.
$10 is not a lot of money but it's past the point of a casual, impulse purchase for me.

So starting this game for the first time, what sort of server should I joined. I joined one labelled new players, but I'm worried that it may remain empty. Is it safer to join medium servers?

So I'm required to buy snorkeling equipment for my class in the fall, and I remember them saying something about getting fins that can go over a pair of waterproof walking shoes, I think? I have no idea what kind of shoes would work with a pair of snorkeling fins...does anyone else know what they're talking about? Would it just be regular waterproof sandals?
HALPS :(

"the time, date and content of the actual surprise will only become available as you experience the surprise"

Ever bought a lifetime subscription to something and don't use it anymore? Maybe an MMO, or a TIVO, or something?
Something made me think last night back to the mid '90s, before 'The Internet' was big. I still had a modem and called up local BBS's. Anyways, one of the big local ones had different payment plans, you could buy points, or a lifetime subscription. Heh, I'm sure none of the people that bought one are still using their modem. Wonder if they feel they got their moneys worth out of it.
Now with LOTRO going free what does that do to people that bought that lifetime subscription?

Ok Shack......SPLICE
Have you been feelin' sad since Cronenberg gave up sci fi and horror?
Well, cheer up because Vincenzo Natali is here to take over the helm.
'Just came back from a screening and it was above and beyond my expectations. Highly intelligent, literate, much better than Cube. The commercials do not do this film justice in the slightest. I'd say it's a modern combo of The Brood, The Fly and Andy Warhol's Frankenstein. Adrian Brody gave an excellent performance. Special effects were eye-popping.
The director was there to answer questions and guess what he's got on his plate next?
Adaptions of High Rise by J.G. Ballard (classic, if you haven't read it) and NEUROMANCER. This is the start of a brilliant horror career, for sure.
Don't read any reviews, just go see it this weekend with an open mind. It will press buttons you didn't think you had!

tl;dr - i have an e3 media pass for the first time and would like some tips/suggestions on how to cover the event for my blog.
So I've been blogging about video games/music/tech in my spare time. (http://www.mydaywillcome.com/) I'm not going to declare that I'm amazing, but I'm trying to get better with each post I make. I seem to have passed the ESA's requirement for a media badge though, so I'm very excited to "cover" the show for the first time.
I've been to E3's in years past, but only to have fun. With the opportunity this year, I figured I'd try to do something productive and create/publish something cool.
What I'm looking for from you guys are some ideas on how what kind of angle I should approach the coverage. I'm clearly not going to out-do the shack or ign or any of the huge sites since I'm just one dude, but I want to do what I can. Obvious things I'm going to do are livetweet and pic/video posting of cool shit I see.
If any of you game journalists (attn: morrisatcnn/remo) out there have any tips, I'm all ears. Or if you know some good resources or people to contact, that'd be awesome too.
Hell, Shack editors, if you want another dude to help out for E3 coverage, I'm more than happy to try to work with you guys.

My wife wants a new laptop for work (self-employed). Current one was... 2006 I think. Core Duo processor (not Core 2 Duo, Core Duo) 1.7GHz.
Anyway she wants me to help of course but laptops are not my forte and the budget (for now) is small. My main problem in trying to help is that I've fallen way behind the times on what the processor names/schema mean these days.
Questions:
- Part of me figures that, short of a Netbook (she's not interested), anything you get these days will be faster (processor-wise) than her current system. Is this right or wrong?
- One of the options I saw today (browsed at Staples) says "Pentium", I thought they didn't use Pentium anymore? Does this mean these laptops are old? Where do Pentium chips fall in the range these days and should they be avoided or not?
- The Core ix thing has passed me by - where do these guys fall? Is a Core i3 faster than a Core 2 Duo or Quad?
- AMD - avoid or no?
Thanks in advance.
