Shogun 2: Total War Announced
by Alice O'Connor, Jun 03, 2010 5:40am PDTThe Creative Assembly is returning to feudal Japan with a sequel to Shogun: Total War, publisher Sega has announced, which is curiously named Shogun 2: Total War.
Set in the middle of the 16th century, the strategy sequel will see players using "military engagements, economics and diplomacy" to reunite Japan's warring clans under their rule to become the new Shogun.
"Improved land and naval battle gameplay" are promised for Shogun 2 as well as character progession with experience and levelling up, plus revamped AI apparently "developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War." Co-op, competitive and team-based multiplayer modes will be on offer in addition to the singleplayer campaign.
Shogun 2: Total War is scheduled for release on PC some time in 2011. The Creative Assembly is also working on an expansion for Napoleon: Total War, due this summer.

I loved the first one. Must've put days worth of playtime into it. They did such a great job imbuing everything with the theme. Plus this setting is a lot more interesting to me than the Empire period.
After the unholy mess Empire was when it was released, I really hope they don't screw this one up.

I've wanted Shogun 2 with every single new game announcement. It was only Empire that I had zero interest in. Really looking forward to this.

It's just a shame how big of a mess the last few Total Wars have been. The campaign and battle AI in the Rome was fucking atrocious, and at that point I just gave up on the series.
Seriously, why put in castle sieges if the pathfinding and collision detection between the buildings is damn near broken. Also, you the ridiculous stuff, like if you broke even a huge enemy force's siege equipment they would just stand there forever being pelted by arrow towers and lose hundreds of men instead of fleeing the battlefield.
The broken sea battles I've heard about in Empire are just further confirmation that they are still adding half-implemented features because it looks good as a bullet-point on the box. I hope this new Shogun is a return to simplicity done right instead of mediocrity en masse.
