Tickling the Ivories in Rock Band 3
by Jeff Mattas, May 31, 2010 11:00am PDTThe third iteration of Rock Band is due out sometime "this holiday season," with more details sure to be spilled at E3 next month.
However, due to a teaser image shown at the end of the recent demo for Green Day: Rock Band (see top-story image), and a recent rumor that the game will sport a new keytar peripheral, it seems incredibly likely that some type of "ebony and ivory" control functionality will appear in Harmonix's next rhythm game.
We don't know exactly what the new peripheral will be, but that hasn't stopped us from cobbling together a speculative list of twenty bands that we feel would be well served by a keyboard-like controller. Of course, if it turns out to be a plastic accordion, just replace all of the following suggestions with Weird Al Yankovic's complete catalog.
Take a look (and a listen) to our suggestions. It's not a complete list, by any means, but don't let that stop you from leaving your own recommendations for keyboard-friendly bands you'd like to see included.

Digging up more late 70s and early 80s, how about some Joe Jackson and Todd Rundgren.

It can't be just 'playing the piano', it has to be stylized like the guitars were/are. Something like having 8 buttons and most of what you do is just fake chords, with the occasional 'shoe-horned solo'.
I'm afraid they might try to ship it with a little 20-key keyboard and the 'street' will be some sort of playschool music notation. That wouldn't be useful for learning to play the piano, and it wouldn't end up being much fun either.
That being said, I've had my eye on a lot of songs that I'd love to play in RockBand but rely heavily on keyboard, so I'm really hoping they figure out a great way to simulate it. Next they need a saxophone.
