Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, May 27, 2010 5:00am PDT"Spending two hours on a game station is equivalent to taking a line of cocaine in the high it produces," was the extraordinary claim made by therapist Steve Pope. John Walker of the wonderful Rock, Paper, Shotgun got in touch with Mr Pope to find out where this claim came from and took him to task for it. Good show, old chap.
I've made clear my love of unusual sealife before so I'm sure you can imagine how excited I was to hear about the classification of the handfish. Spiffing.

Post-apocalyptic fiction is my favorite genre, and the fact that this one didn't include sci-fi made it even more compelling. I found myself wanting to know more about:
1. How the cataclysm occured.
2. What happened to the government and the service agencies that would have responded to the disaster.
3. Why the filthy gray color was on everything.
I was saddened by the depravity of man in his last days, the fragility of civilization and the everyday world that we tend to take for granted. I kept thinking of other places I would go, actions I would have taken, how I would have been better prepared. This is one film where a narration worked wonderfully, and I got the distinct impression that the Man had exhausted other realistic options. Ely made mention of prior knowledge of the pending disaster, so it's possible this could have been prepared for, perhaps those and other details are in the book. I think the sequence in the bunker was a nice reprieve, and I found myself thinking "I would have somehow tried to make the bunker situation work for a longer time and lock the door from inside, build a bigger cart to haul more gear, build a raft to go out to the ship". Begrudgingly, I had to conclude that perhaps my obvious, quick observations would have been eliminated in favor of a safe and simple plan.
Later, I thought about what it would take to survive something like that. Having essential gear to start out would certainly help, but in the end it would take a well defended, sustainable outpost to endure the long haul. Having a single book that contained the knowledge of how best to survive would be invaluable. I can see why the church as an institution has endured for so long, it provided hope through some of humanity's darkest days.
I knew the film would be painful to watch, but I had experience that pain.

It has s-video in, and I have an ancient camcorder with s-video out. It must be possible, somehow, to capture video from the s-video port with this thing, but there doesn't appear to be any such functionality in Windows Media Center. I'm guessing I need a third party program. Does anyone have any recommendations for (cheap) software that will do this?

"“Please add more things to do for CO OP Free roam. Missions etc. Will pay for DLC or co op pack.†– received via Twitter
We’ve announced the Outlaws to the End (free) Co-Op DLC Pack, which you should expect sometime in June. We’ll have more details on that pack specifically very soon. Look for some screens unveiling one of the other missions in that pack very soon. But also know that there will definitely be more DLC packs to follow, later this summer and into the fall. Some exciting things are planned – we’ll be announcing info including release time frames and pricing on those in the coming months."

Update: 5/27/10
Welp! Today is the day. The first Shacknews Starcraft 2 tournament is coming to end today. The finals will be played on TONIGHT at 8:30pm EST. 3rd place will be streamed after I believe if they are playing then. I cannot guarantee that yet though. Scheduling is a little difficult due to time zones and such. Hopefully I will have confirmation before the finals start.
The games WILL be casted by Chill and myself. They are going to be streamed on Loisoh's stream. I will be putting my stream up as well for people with lower bandwidth connections.
I really want to thank all of the players in the tournament for participating. I really wasn't expecting the turnout that I got, especially for a beta tournament I started on a whim. I hope everyone had fun in the tournament even though it was rocky in a few spots. I hopefully will have all of the fine details ironed out for the next one and tournament #2 will run a lot smoother. Before the games start there is going to be some more details dropped about the future tournaments and such. I suggest you listen ;)
Bracket:

bongturbo v Demius in the finals
agrosheep v stolennosferatu for 3rd/4th place
Map list (Best of 5):

Recap of prizes:
1st place: Starcraft 2 Collectors Edition

"Perhaps the problem isn’t Foxconn but China."
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/05/27/foxconn-suicide
He assumes that Foxconn's suicide rate is high, hence China's suicide rate must be abhorrent. Yet Wikipedia lists China with the 25th highest suicide rate behind nations like Hungary, Finland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, and more.
