SEGA Bringing Classics to PC via Steam, Others

A number of the "evergreen games from the legendary SEGA Genesis" are coming to PC via Steam and other unnamed digital distribution outlets, SEGA announced today.

Altered Beast and Comix Zone

Among the initial titles are Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin, Comix Zone, Vectorman, Crack Down, Gain Ground, Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi, Sonic 3D Blast, Space Harrier II, with the first batch due on June 1 and starting at $2.99 each.

I have all the genesis games as roms, and I have all the old cd roms of the smash packs and what not so kinda meh for me but will be awesome for people who never experienced the classic sega games. Sega is one of my all time favorite companies, and part of my heart died when they stopped making consoles.

I would love to see more companies sell their old console/arcade stuff over Steam. I'd REALLY love to see them pack the rom in there too (or just sell you that) and let you use whatever you want to play the game (so you can get the features you want).

Its also scary how many times I've bought Zelda3...its like that line Tommy Lee Jones has in MiB about having to buy the White Album again, but with LTTP.

Sega needs to decide to either release classics separately, or as a bundle. The Ultimate Sega Collection for PS3 and 360 is a much better deal at around $20 or $30 than buying games for $3 each. Sure, you might not want every game in a bundle, but for that cheap, who cares? I'm sure the bundle could easily be ported to PC, but that will probably happen, just as it has with consoles: Sega re-releases games individually (i.e., on XBL) and then comes out with a bundle.

I'm sure they'll manage to make money off them, but I would expect their margins to be low what with the prevalence of emulators on the PC. Also, $3 a game seems like a high price point.
