Evening Reading

What happened on Lost last night? Man. They've got 3.5 hours (minus commercials) left to explain what the hell is going on, but last night introduced way more questions than it answered. Keep your discussions spoiler-tagged, as always.

In other news, I'm playing a lot of Skate 3 and enjoying it a lot, but EA needs to hurry up with fixing the grind magnetism bug for Hardcore mode. Hopefully, I'll have my review later this week.

Guess i'm out another $10/mo come July 1st when I can upgrade. I don't really mind considering I only pay $52/mo right now and the entire Austin metro is covered in WiMax.

    :D :D :D

      The good: The phone owns.

The bad: $10/month for a service NOT AVAILABLE TO ME pisses me off to no end. And everyone seems to be reporting that it's mandatory if you have the phone, regardless of where you live!

        early adopter tax unfortunately :(

They have to pay for WiMAX rollout somehow.

Thing is, there's no other really good smartphone on Sprint, and Verizon and AT&T are far more expensive. T-Mobile is price-competitive, BUT their coverage is ass out here.

        yes, it is ridiculous
if it was an extra $10 to get wimax, i would be fine, but forcing people to pay for something that they cant even use is absurd
and if they are worried that people wouldnt want to spend extra to get speeds faster than 3g, then they shouldnt have invested so much money into 4g in the first place

Whoa nelly, maybe the $10/month is optional if you want to use 4g?

Sheeeit, that phone is sick. Too bad about the network lagging behind, but that's to be expected.

I am afraid of what phones will be like in 10 years.

T-Mobile also has Austin covered really well; here's what I get at home:

      http://conan.shackspace.com/pics/speedtest-tmobile.png

That's on 3G. Even just a block closer to downtown It bumps up to 3.5G and my speeds go up considerably - I hit 3MB down at a borign morning SXSW panel.

I'm curious how much the contracted phone is or how such things as upgrades work on our sprint demo account at work. Would love to have one of these as a work phone. :)

That's pretty standard for these types of phones, actually lower than I've seen in the past.

nexus one was more. But with the N1, I get a reduced monthly plan price on T-Mo because I bought an unsubsidized phone. AFAIK if you buy the unsubsidized EVO, you still have to pay the same plan price as the people who buy the subsidized one, and that's just bullshit.

mwasher, what is the $10 extra a month for? Data? I am on the Sprint SERO plan here in Austin, do I need to pay that extra $10 too? I can upgrade now, I've just been waiting for this phone though

      • reply
        May 12, 2010 5:56 PM

SERO has unlimited data already btw.

      • reply
        May 12, 2010 6:00 PM

You cant get one with SERO. Last phone you can get with SERO is the touch pro 2.

        May 12, 2010 6:00 PM

The EVO does not work on SERO. No smartphone past some older Blackberry or the Touch Pro 2 does. This includes the Hero, Moment, and EVO, as well as newer Blackberrys and, for some reason, the Instinct.

You cannot activate any of those phones on SERO, which makes me sad, because I love my two SERO accounts.

And the $10/month is for 4g access and (so I'm hearing now) unlimited data with no cap for both 3g and 4g.

For some reason I thought the 4g download speeds would be higher. They were only getting around 4mb down with a tower being in the same building.

i like how it has loaded and is streaming the HQ youtube video long before the first frame of the iphone's standard quality youtube video is playing.

I have no idea why but the iPhone's youtube does seem to have problems streaming. It's really odd because on my iPad it's fast and flawless. I guess it might be that I don't have a 3GS, but it seems that the faster processor helps a lot in the video department.

I wasn't really meaning it as a competition because obviously the iphone is an older device, but more of a "wow we can watch 720p video streamed to our cell phone almost instantly now!"

            :D

Yeah it is pretty cool, I wish 4G stuff was ubiquitous already, I am getting pretty tired of 1mbps being "acceptable" download speeds.

That is mighty tempting. Apple better step the F up if it wants to stay competitive with the next iPhone, the current offering is nowhere near what's listed on that page.

Wonder how WiMax coverage is in the Bay Area.

Based on the iPhone leak I would say Apple is planning pretty well. It won't include a data connetion that is as fast as WiMax, but it looks like it will include video chat (front facing camera), an Apple A4 processor, a higher resolution screen (although not much larger in size), a bigger battery, a flash for the rear camera (also capable of 720p recording), and the new software update which includes multitasking and tons of extra stuff.

I would say they are setup to be pretty competitive with this. Obviously some people will still prefer the EVO for it's WiMax or Android capability, but I am pretty sure Apple will take away a lot of the spotlight that the EVO might gain.

As I said, some people will prefer the EVO for very specific reasons, like people who don't want to be on AT&T for example. I am just saying that Apple will likely take the spotlight here with their new iPhone, which ironically comes out around the same time as the EVO.
