Steam Mac Details Emerge
by Chris Faylor, May 11, 2010 7:24am PDTWith Valve's digital distribution platform Steam slated to launch on the Mac platform tomorrow--Wednesday, May 12--the company today issued a few more details.
New "collections of Mac titles" will be available on Wednesdays, Valve explained today, with "each designed to highlight specific functionalitites of Steam on the Mac."
Tomorrow's launch lineup is meant to demonstrate "'Steam Play,' which allows customers to purchase a game once and play it on all Steam supported platforms," with games including Valve's puzzle-shooter Portal and Runic's action-RPG Torchlight.
"Steam for the Mac solves so many problems for us as a developer," noted Max Scahefer of Runic. "We look forward to our future games coming out on the Mac as well."

But the point still stands. I'm sorry you can't help but take hyperbole literally. Yeah wow there is actually some proprietary software for Linux that totally means it's just as easy to create as it would be for Windows and totally worth it given the market size (hint: this is sarcasm. It's sort of related to hyperbole).
It is hard to get software to run across many forms of Linux, harder than getting software to run across Windows. Creating a Privateer Remake binary to run easily on many distros was a massive pain in the ass. It was easier for me to make a Windows binary while using Linux than it was to make a Linux binary that would run on more than my distro. It's easier to run the Windows client for Unreal Tournament on Linux than it is to run the Linux client. On and on.
The existence of some proprietary software does not negate the point, that it is massively more difficult (due to platform variability) on Linux than on Windows, which combined with the vanishingly small potential market keeps most companies from giving a shit, and I bet Valve will be among them.
