Steam Mac Details Emerge

With Valve's digital distribution platform Steam slated to launch on the Mac platform tomorrow--Wednesday, May 12--the company today issued a few more details.

New "collections of Mac titles" will be available on Wednesdays, Valve explained today, with "each designed to highlight specific functionalitites of Steam on the Mac."

Valve's Portal and Runic's Torchlight

Tomorrow's launch lineup is meant to demonstrate "'Steam Play,' which allows customers to purchase a game once and play it on all Steam supported platforms," with games including Valve's puzzle-shooter Portal and Runic's action-RPG Torchlight.

"Steam for the Mac solves so many problems for us as a developer," noted Max Scahefer of Runic. "We look forward to our future games coming out on the Mac as well."

Steam becoming cross platform (pc, mac, linux) is great news all around for PC gamers. I don't own a mac, but expanding the pc gaming audience to these operating systems is going to help fight the "consolization" of many games in the area that matters most - user interfaces within games and feature sets.

Now I am sad I didn't pick up Torchlight on Steam when it was super cheap. I wanted to wait until it was out on OS X because that was the version I wanted. Now that Steam is coming to OS X it would have worked out anyway! Doh, oh well, $20 is a great deal for the game anyway.

I want to be excited.... I really do. But I recently played the slow and ugly crapfest that was Starcraft 2 OSX Beta. If Blizzard, who has a history of great support for the platform, can't do it...well, we'll see what Valve comes up with.

Do we have a complete list of games that will be available tomorrow for the Mac? A few friends (one on Mac) were expecting to play L4D tomorrow with this (barring Valve Time) but all the previews hint that only a couple source games (Portal, TF2) will be at launch, but I've not seen confirmation either way otherwise.
