Sony Rolls Out Extended Warranty Program for PS3 and PSP Systems

6
Sony is now offering extended warranties for the PlayStation 3 and all models of the PlayStation Portable in chunks of one to two additional years. The PlayStation Protection Plan covers exactly what is covered by the included 1-year manufacturer warranty included with all new PS3 and PSP purchases.

For the PSP, a plan that covers accidental damage to the screen is also available, but does not cover dead pixels.

  • PS3 - 1-year ($44.99) or 2-year ($59.99)
  • PSP - 1-year ($29.99) or 2-year ($39.99)
  • PSP Accidental Damage - 1-year ($39.99) or 2-year ($49.99)
Plans are only available to customers that are still within the original 1-year warranty. If a system does break, it will be shipped to Sony at no cost to the consumer and repaired or replaced at Sony's discretion.

Third-party plans are available at numerous retailers including GameStop and Best Buy, which both replace broken systems with whatever stock is available, which could include used or refurbished systems.

Sony's plan does offer the security of knowing that it will be handled by official Sony technicians, but does not match third-party plans for convenience. Third-party plans have to be purchased along with the system so Sony gains the advantage there, offering coverage to all systems less than a year old.

It is unlikely, however, that this plan will be promoted by retail employees over a retailer's own plan. Shacknews has reached out to GameStop about its plans for incorporating (or ignoring) the PlayStation Protection Plan. Historically, the PlayStation 3 has low failure rates, but like all electronics, are subject to failure.
