Red Faction TV Movie Planned
by Chris Faylor, Apr 27, 2010 7:40am PDTAs the relationship between cable television network Syfy (formerly Sci Fi Channel) and video game publisher THQ continues to blossom, Syfy has revealed plans to bring another of THQ's video game franchises to television in the form of Red Faction.
The explosive video games, set amidst the volatile political landscape of Mars, are to be transformed into a two-hour movie that will air on Syfy. According to Broadcasting & Cable, the movie will also serve as a pilot for a potential television series.
The third entry in the video game series, Red Faction: Guerrilla, was released on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009. A fourth is currently in the works, "produced in conjunction with Syfy Games" and due out no later than March 31, 2011.

Red Faction to me is most memorable for its use of physics- in teh original games you could dig through terrain and now you have fully destructible buildings. Similarly, Prince of Persia is now known for the acrobatic stunts you can pull off or for rewinding time, and Max Payne was initially famous for the ability to go into 'bullet time'. Doom is famous for being an old school first person shooter.
All of these are purely gameplay features which do not translate into film.
Games which I think could translate very well into films, like Half Life, Warcraft, Fallout, Assassin's Creed, all games which are memorable beyond gameplay elements, never get made into films. :/

And Guerilla was okay I guess, but didn't feel like the first Red Faction in terms of atmosphere and story at all.
