Thunderbird Mobo Problem

The Register is reporting that AMD has hit a motherboard problem with the Athlon follow-up, the Thunderbird. Apparently it's incompatible with the VIA KX-133 chipset. More than 30 Slot A mobos use this chipset, so you might wanna check your manual if you're gonna need a motherboard upgrade for the Thunderbird :( The upcoming KZ-133 and AMD's own Irongate work fine with the new CPU.

  • To my recollection, isn't the Irongate going to cost around $1000?? Geez, as if I'm going to waste money on 266mhz DDR RAM chipsets. No matter what RAM support you get, it's not long term anyway because newer and faster memory will always be coming out. The objective here is not to get the best or most amazing technology, the objective for me is to get the most gaming frame-rates for the money that I put in to it, or in other words, price-to-performance ratio. RDRAM with Intel chipsets or DDR RAM are both heavily overpriced for their small performance increases.
