In preparation of the massive 'Tyrannis' update hitting EVE Online on May 18, developer CCP has released some more screenshots and information on the new features.

EVE Gate and Planetary Interaction

As previously reported, 'Tyrannis' will bring two massive changes to the PC MMO in the form of a new web-based community portal, EVE Gate, and the ability to colonize and harvest planets, which will tie into the eventual EVE-set console shooter DUST 514.

To put this in perspective: Eve has game-breaking lag introduced by the last expansion, to the point that fleet battles are determined by which side lags out first. The method of acquiring territory was also changed so that attacks must occur in the defenders timezone (meaning weeks of fighting at 6am with nothing to do during primetime). And the risk/reward still disfavors putting assets at risk in pvp, because the best bang for your buck is in non-pvp areas.

And CCP's response was to make a planetary mining expansion....

    The "fix for lag"? Have you participated and/or seen a dev blog about that? I had always assumed that they were doing some minor lag work and cranking the debugging *way* up to get some info on why it's lagging since the "logs show nothing"...
