Sony Launching 3D TVs With Free 3D PS3 Games

24
Sony has announced that it will launch its first 'Bravia 3D' stereoscopic 3D television set in June with four free 3D downloadable PlayStation 3 games, in Europe at least.

Consumers who purchase the Sony Bravia 3D HX800 launch model or later Bravia 3D TVs will score free copies Wipeout HD, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, PAIN and Super Stardust HD for download from the PlayStation Network, with full free stereoscopic 3D trimmings.

Similar to the technology used in Avatar and other recent 3D movies, Sony's Bravia 3D televisions display two images taken from slightly different angles that are filtered by stylish 3D glasses to create the illusion of three dimensional space.

There's no word yet on whether this offer will also come to North America. Presumably other brands of 3D-enabled TV will work with the games, if you fork out for them yourself.

Didn't we already go through this 3D phase and it sucked then?

You're thinking of the awful ones where the glasses projected 3d images in beautiful monochrome. This is the tech they used in Avatar. It really does work.

I hated how the 3D used in Avatar darkened the image. The effect was awesome, and I might see another movie like that, but IMO it wasn't good enough...it's not THE technology.

Also, having seen some of Avatar without 3D, I must say I prefer the normal way. There's a ton of detail that IMO gets washed out wearing the glasses.

And, really, even though I think pushing the limits of technology is cool, it's really not the direction hollywood needs to be going IMO. Flashy crap can't cover up a bad story, and even though I didn't hate Avatar's story, it felt like something I'd seen. There have been a ton of comparisons in that regard so I don't need to repeat anything here...suffice to say I fear more movies like the newer Star Wars stuff. Movies where the technology takes over and the storytelling is left in the dust.

Hollywood's already based enough on spectacle...I hope what substance there is sticks around. Video games are already headed this route...MW2's story was some of the worst, unrealistic, inconsistent bullshit I've seen in a while, especially after MW1's was good. I'm glad to hear Crysis 2's team is concentrating on story.

Weren't they capped out around 60 hz/30 frames per eye for practical purposes? I thought the locked standard for this new stuff would come out to about 120 frames per eye/ 240hz together, no?
