Army Wants Holodeck

by Maarten Goldstein, May 04, 2000 4:29am PDT

CNN is reporting that inspired by The Matrix and Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Army would like to have a holodeck to simulate war. While it's still at least 5 to 10 years away before computers will be powerful enough to render that kind of stuff in real time (and even then without real physics), experts that were hired by the Army are convinced it's possible and already have a plan ready.

Lt. Gen. William Campbell, the Army's chief information officer, said the Army is studying the feasibility of building a "holodeck," a cutting-edge simulator that would use virtual cinematography and video game technology to create realistic 3-D scenes of actual locations worldwide that soldiers could use for training and mission rehearsal. "It allows you to go anywhere, anytime," Campbell said.

  • CAVE based holodecks? Nah... bulky overkill.

    Direct Retinal Scanning Displays are next since LCD's & CRT's can't cut it. RSD's can paint an entire field of view on your retina with unlimited theorectical resolution. Problem is that there's no commercially available blue or green lasers, just red.

    As far as the Army goes... well... we don't need them. Armies are the pawns of their leaders and wars are initiated by bickering leaders with an imposed agenda. Leaders' with political differences would rather send millions to die for their causes rather than assassinate the opposition directly, destabilizing the regime, and risk retribution themselves (which is why "we" (rather they, our leaders) have outlawed assassination politics)

  • In the article, they mention headsets.... {snip}

    "The holodeck is the Holy Grail of the institute," Debevec said. "It will be a
    next-generation virtual reality simulation technique that will make it possible for a
    person to go into a room or put on a headset and really feel like they are in a
    different place. They will be able to see, hear, touch and even smell everything.
    The terrain or environment will be realistic, and eventually there will even be
    other characters to interact with and teach and learn from."

    But I think we will have it before the Army does and for a lot less money. Anyone see that HBO movie about the "Bradley" APC?
