Evening Reading: FPS Fever!

By Brian Leahy, Apr 14, 2010 5:00pm PDT This morning, Take-Two announced that 2K Marin is developing an FPS game based upon X-COM. The outrage was palpable.

I'm willing to give 2K Marin a chance here. I'm sure this is a move meant to echo Bethesda's work with the Fallout franchise, which led to the creation of Fallout 3.

Personally, I'm a much bigger fan of Todd Howard and Bethesda's work than 2K Marin's, but we'll see what the studio can cook up.

  • Taking a break from my sonic binge in order to decide for myself who is right or wrong in the internet I just took a break last night and tonight to play Klonoa on the Wii which I just beat.

In regards to Klonoa I am now too sad to fire up the next game in my cue :(. It's ending reminded me of that witch from Kingdom Hearts II who turns over to Roxas and says "You weren't supposed to exist Roxas." But it was a fairly fun game non-the less that started out incredibly easy and ended on a fairly challenging page. It also reminded me ALOT of Kirby's Quest for the Crystal Shards. If you have a Wii and are willing to sped 20 bucks I'd highly recommend it. Even though it is fairly short.

  • So I just met the "FUCK ALL" tank in Valkyria Chronicles. I almost destroyed it, too, had I had one more turn (Welkin got blown up) I would have won, and I might have actually accepted the fact that I lost a dude and moved on. I had one guy in a bad position, though, so she got raped when Selvaria the Valkyria showed up, and then I sent a dude over to recover her body and she did, but then got gunned down herself, and then I tried again and the same thing happened (but then the third person got away) but then that bitch swept through the eastern side of the map and blew away all of my guys. Finally I shot out all of the radiators and I only had one lancer and Welkin left and I leaned into it and then one more well placed tank shot would have blown it up... and it fires its rear gun and destroyed Welkin.

Oh well, I'll try again some other time. But seriously, fuck that chick.

  • I am such a sucker for open world games, both sandbox action games and RPGs. I recently finished playing through the whole God of War trilogy, which was a lot of awesome, and just the other day started Just Cause 2 which I rented for 360. And no matter how good the former was, no matter how epic the events and how high the production values were, nothing gets me into a game like a feeling of freedom and exploration. Just dumb things like being able to climb a few km high in a jet and skydive out, things that have nothing to do with the point of the game, draw me in more than the stuff that IS the point. (story and gameplay-wise anyway. I'm sure a good argument can be made that the sandbox aspect certainly is intentional and part of the intended experience)

In Just Cause 2 in particular, with the scale of the world and the availability of aircraft plus stuff like the grapple, I'm in heaven. I was so excited the first time I realized I could hide up in the treetops while observing the enemy. Having the vertical element available is always fun, as it is in stuff like crackdown and inFamous, and even something like Morrowind since levitation existed.

I figure it's a good thing if it adds entertainment value to games for me. Like I said before, I know people have their valid criticisms of stuff like Oblivion and Fallout 3, but I even had fun playing through Two Worlds so they were pretty awesome for me.
