X-Com 'Re-Imagined' as FPS by BioShock 2 Dev

By Alice O'Connor, Apr 14, 2010 5:40am PDT BioShock 2 developer 2K Marin is to revive the classic turn-based tactical PC series X-COM as a first-person shooter, publisher 2K Games announced today.

"True to the roots of the franchise," according to 2K, the PC and Xbox 360 shooter named simply 'XCOM' will put players "in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity--and frailty--against a foe beyond comprehension" as an FBI agent.

"With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise," said 2K president Christoph Hartmann in a press statement. "Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride."

The X-COM series was begun in 1994 by Mythos with UFO: Enemy Unknown, blending base management, research and production with turn-based combat. The series was re-released on Steam and other outlets after 2K owner Take-Two picked up the rights.

Rumours had swirled since 2007 that BioShock creator Irrational Games would revive the franchise--which studio head Ken Levine has described as "sort of like my first love"--and resumes indicated that former Irrational studio 2K Australia was involved.

There's no word yet on when XCOM is scheduled to be released.

  • "Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride." This quote scares me. It sounds like the story is going to take place in the perspective of an FBI agent in a large city that becomes a target of an alien invasion. The more I think about this, the worse the vibe I get from this X-COM iteration. Fans I'm pretty sure do not want a fresh perspective to X-COM in the eyes of one man, its all about squad based combat, taking down UFO's with fighter jets and recovering artifacts and alien technology to better annihilate them then take the fight to their home-world. This new perspective is NOT X-COM and should probably be named something else to save the X-COM franchise from such undesirable taint. Narrative ride????? Sounds like this game is going to run on rails following the story along making the game a one play through type game. This game does not sound like it will stand the test of time like the original X-COM. The original X-COM had so many different ways to play the game almost making each game never the same game each play through. FPS is fine, but stray too much from the main point of what makes an X-COM game great then you have a disaster on your hands. So far what has been said points to a disaster. I've read a few of the comments saying that the strategy market is not in demand and FPS is right now and its more of a corporate decision on what will sell the best is the path this new title is taking. I'm not at all totally convinced about that. I mean look at Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, I don't think blizzard would dream of even changing those 2 games over to an FPS without the fear of every fan retaliating by taking a hot steaming shit on their front door step. Those two games play the best and work out the best in the same flavor they were released as. Some games just work out best one way vs another. I personally think this new fresh look at X-COM is an interesting approach but definitely not at all good for a revival of a beloved franchise.
