Evening Reading: What Are You Playing?
by Brian Leahy, Apr 09, 2010 5:00pm PDTAnother week is in the books and it's time to retreat to our man caves and enjoy a weekend full of gaming and/or social activities. What are you doing this weekend, gaming or otherwise?
I might try to finish BioShock 2 after the discussion of the game on this week's Weekend Confirmed, but I'm pretty sure that will just turn into more StarCraft II beta.

My wife and I closed on our first co-op apartment today. Already found a bunch of issues we missed: crappy patch jobs in and around the kitchen, mud sprayed on the wall below the sink, probably where somebody attempted to do a DIY fix-up job and failed.
The good news is that we bought the place a few grand below asking price, we'll be getting $8000 from the first-time homebuyers credit this year (doing taxes tomorrow), and it'll give us the chance to build the kitchen we really want & hopefully increase our apartment's value in the process. Plus, we're getting a bit more space than what we currently have, our mortgage with everything included (maintenance, homo's insurance, etc.) will only be ~$40/mo more than what we pay, and we don't have to put up with any more bullshit about not being able to mod our place.
If I weren't miserably sick with the flu, I'd be at a bar right now. But as-is, the only thing I'm drinking right now is ginger tea. Anyway, yay!

I currently have a pair of HD555s, which I've used for many years at this point and are still as awesome as when I first got them.I'm looking for another set of cans to be used at work that are nowhere near as leaky, as I'm in moderately close proximity to other people.
So, I'd just like some sweet headphones that are comparable in quality and fit to the HD555s, but aren't open as to leak audio.

This is probably my favorite song as of late. Why is Wire the best band? I can't stop coming back to their holy trinity (154, Chairs Missing, Pink Flag)

After some testing with the new R9 version it looks like DICE sorted out some server side maplist issues. This is good news because: http://pastebin.com/srK9j8eR
What you're looking at there is a rotation of 2 rush maps (both sides) and one conquest map (both sides). The tool is predictably and reliably switching maps and modes. This playlist was arbitrarily defined by myself, but you can craft your own game lists/modes/rotations/maps, and make it as wild as you want. You can even toss in Squad Rush or Squad Death Match (though I don't recommend it since this alters the number of slots available). The switch every two minutes for inactivity was accelerated for testing purposes but that time interval is also customizable, and you can of course disable it entirely if you don't want it. This will rotate a map if there have been no players on it for the specified period of time.
So, for those admins whose servers I have on the authenticator, if you're interested in getting signed up with this PM me!

I read this interesting article about the founding of Five Guys, how they developed, and how they do business.

I've been a Megadeth fan for years, but this is the first time I really think one of their video is noteworthy and cool.

What are some popular\good dubstep bands out there? I have been listening to lots of trip-hop and drum n bass for the last couple of years and finally figured out what dubstep is, and I think I like it.

Question though... I bought the pack off Steam that came with BTS, Warlords and Colonization. Does that content have to be played separately or is it all included when I start up a game? I've been launching BTS as that was the only one I had downloaded so far.

I recall a lot of you (or maybe just some of you) waiting to get a Zune because the sizes available were too small. Apparently the 64GB is popping up in stores now for $350 (official release date was supposed to be Monday).

Wish I could justify it but my first gen is still going strong.

The Shacknews LA server was, literally, 21 v 11 for two rounds. The future of this game really saddens me without a patch addressing major issues.

Should I declare it and pay the tax? If I don't and get caught what can happen? Are there loopholes around it? Should I just pay the duty? It's just 14% right?

Reading this story and the comments at the bottom from Derek and the former devs of some MMO WoW clone called Alganon is fascinating for those of us interested in how things operate behind the development of a MMO (or any software that depends on VC capital).
At first Derek comes across in the comments as reasonable and even sound of mind, but eventually his megalomania returns and once the devs he "fired" pipe up, *they* actually sound like the sane ones. Fascinating stuff.
TLDR: Battle of the lesser evils!! Derek Smart VS. the guy behind Horizons (David Allen)
Whoever wins...the users lose.
