      By the end of the first season, Vic's a guy who you've got some pretty mixed up feelings for. He does terrible things, but he always has good motives and cares about innocent people more than you would expect from your average cop, and the lengths he goes to are fascinating.
      
      The Wire might be more realistic in its depiction of the things that motivate people, but none of the characters really go outside of their comfort zone to make the show compelling. You can tell that the show was written by someone who had experience in seeing people behaving in those situations, but really had no experience to tell them how to write believable and deep character archetypes that help you connect to them. If I wanted to watch real crime, I could just watch Cops.
