Evening Reading: I Don't Care About 3D
by Brian Leahy, Mar 23, 2010 5:00pm PDTSo, Nintendo revealed the 3DS early this morning in Japan and I could not be less excited. Not only do I care absolutely zero about 3D-gaming (about as much as I care about 3D-movies), I can't imagine it working on a handheld.
Maybe Nintendo has a big surprise up its sleeve, but I think we could be looking at the next Virtual Boy here. Either way, we'll know more at E3.
You know what I am excited about? LOST!

For all the arguments there are about parallax and relative motion being important, "3D" to people now basically means a stereoscopic image with static depth perception, and not a standard 2D display with a really innovative and immersive camera control scheme.
FWIW on a handheld I think the head/motion/perspective tracking thing is probably more interesting than a little stereo 3D type display. (but at the same time if I'm thinking of the right video, it wasn't necessarily what they'll be doing on the new handheld from what others were saying)
