The Chronicles of Riddick developer Starbreeze Studios has revealed that one of the two projects it was readying alongside publisher Electronic Arts has been cancelled, leaving the fate of their Jason Bourne title and revival of a classic EA series uncertain.

The identity of the cancelled project was not revealed. The first collaboration between the two companies, Project RedLime, was announced in February 2008 and was said to "reinvent one of EA's most acclaimed classic franchises." The second, a licensed game based on Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne, was announced in February 2009.

Little on either has been revealed since their respective announcements, though rumors suggested that Project RedLime was in fact EA's revival of Syndicate.

"Our relationship with EA is stronger than ever," said Starbreeze CEO Johan Kristiansson, according to Google Translate "The aim now is to spend more resources on the game that demonstrated the greatest potential. This game is already in full production."

The cancellation leaves "no need to make any significant change in the number of employees," Starbreeze added, further noting it is in talks "with a few selected games publishers about potential new projects." We've reached out to EA for more details.

Update: "We have nothing title-specific to announce today," Electronic Arts told Shacknews when contacted in regards to today's news. "EA is focusing resource on fewer, bigger titles. We're working with the team at Starbreeze to make a great game."

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

I hope it was the Bourne title, because I know Starbreeze can do justice to a Syndicate revamp.

Yeah we really don't need another Bourne game. Syndicate would be awesome by Starbreeze.

I agree 100%. Syndicate really needs to come back and could be a lot of fun.

      It definitely wasn't Bourne.

I highly doubt that EA would fuck over a syndicate revival for a shitty franchise game... It doesn't strike me as wise, especially with so many dumb action games already on the market.

So is it a syndicate reboot or simply porting the old version to xbox live or something?

Given that it's Starbreeze, it was a reboot. They can have any old studio port the game to XBL.
