Evening Reading: Ripping Heads Off of Things

By my estimation, I'm about 80% through God of War 3. I'm trucking through it in preparation for this week's podcast, Weekend Confirmed, which kicks off on Friday.

The boss battles are amazing and some of the scenes are downright brutal. It has became clear to me why Dante's Inferno had to be released before God of War 3 to even have a chance. Not that I didn't already expect this to be the case.

Game of the Evening - First-Person Shooters:

Unreal Tournament: "I actually got this when I was still on dial-up, so bot matches were pretty standard, and yet thoroughly entertaining. I loved it though, and with the addition of a cable Internet connection, I was able to download custom content that kept me entertained for longer than many retail games, including ridiculous stuff like Strangelove and Rocket-X. Entire communities grew up around creating custom maps and mods for this game, although these are unfortunately dying off as Unreal Tournament 3 has not been the refresher to the franchise that many people had hoped for." Finally back to podcasting starting this week. Jeff guested on Yours/Listen UP and was always awesome. And with Brian on board now it all fell into place.

We're going to have fun with it. Whatcha' Been Playin? will be back. We're going to do four minute warning in one segment every week. Haven't exactly figured out whether that will be submitted questions or stuff we come up with or, most likely, some combination of the two. I want to include stuff that's getting a lot of conversations going in the chatty threads too. And then Brian's going to rock a recap of the top news stories of the week in the Front Page.

Whole thing will run about 2 hours, split into four segments and will air each Friday by 4pm Eastern/1pm Pacific.

Still have plenty to figure out, one big part of that is how all of you would like to be part of it.

Silly question but what's the language going to be like? One of the things that slows down my listening of podcasts is that most of them don't really worry about it and I could play them at work if it wasn't for the language.

Cool, I'll give it a listen. Though I have to say I usually experience podcast fatigue after about the 1:30 mark.

Well if it's split into four segments like he mentioned, it might be easy to break from and come back to one later. I personally hate really long podcasts too, but if they keep it interesting and entertaining I don't think 2 hours will be a problem at all, I might even want more.

If they spend 30 minutes talking about all the new releases this week like the bombcast, then yeah it's going to be trying. As long as they have some conversations about games and not just reading news or lists or whatever throughout, it should be good times.

I wasn't a die hard / regular listener of the various 1UP podcasts but I've heard more than a few and am really looking forward to this. You guys seem really enthusiastic about it too which is always a good sign. Good luck and have fun, all of you!

Fine with me.. I have my i-pod sitting in my car hardwired to my headunit... it just picks up where I left off when I get back in the car. Many of hours have been spent listening to 1up podcasts (and others) on my commute to and from work. It puts a smile on my face.

Each segment it's own file, or what? I'd hate to be trying to scrub through a 2 hour file to skip to a segment if I don't have time for or one of the earlier ones sucks.

tons of them are well over an hour. In gaming specifically 1Up Yours/Listen Up/4Guys1Up was always minimum 90 minutes, likewise for Idle Thumbs, GFW radio and others. I've got a history one that's 60-90 minutes per episode too. It's far from uncommon, there's a reason they added specific scrubbing speed controls to the iPhone.

and I would hate to have to queue up 4 segments each week instead of having it as just one file.

Or you could just click the scrub bar on the ipod and take the 2 seconds it takes to fast-forward.

this is my biggest gripe with gaming podcasts. It's not so much that they're too long (I could listen to a 2 hour BS Report or PTI) but that there are some games I just don't care about and don't really want to listen to 35 minutes about it. Breaking these up into chapters would allow me to pick and choose what I want to hear.

Shackbattle recaps (or just slight mentions), talk about whatever the current shackhyped game is, maybe the occassional Off-Topic hilarious posts being retold, user submitted questions for the guest (if its a dev or whatever)...

The 4PM EST airing is great for me. I can load that sucker up on my iPod for work.

Oh! Pick a game of the evening from the week and do a feature on it - maybe its impact, your experiences of it, or some interesting behind the scenes kind of facts about it - if its multi and you have a copy of it, do a "versus" kind of feature.

I need one more really good gaming podcast. I seem to have one day during the week where I'm all out of gaming podcasts. I reach a point in the week where I've listened to the latest Idle Thumbs and Rebel FM and Giant Bombcast and Gamespy Debriefing and I need something besides This American Life or Fresh Air. Bring it on. Can't wait.

NICE! YES! Finally! I was a huge fan of 1up Yours.. Listen Up.. and 4 Guys 1 up... which all seemd to die relatively quickly one after another. So I'm very excited for this. Garnett it was cool hearing you on David's last show over at 1up especially with Shane and the whole crew... it was just like old times. I look foward to the new podcast, should be good.
