Weekend Discussion: What's Old Is New Again

by Chris Faylor, Mar 20, 2010 9:35am PDT

Nearly a decade after their original releases, spruced-up versions of Pokemon Gold / Silver and Perfect Dark made their way into the modern era this past week under the guises of Pokemon HeartGold / SoulSilver and, er, Perfect Dark.

It's tough not to get a little nostalgic and think about how things have changed across the past ten years. Back then, I had to go to the store to buy Perfect Dark on a cartridge and it wasn't exactly cheap or pretty. Today, I'm able to legally download Perfect Dark for just $10, and it's got better graphics, a much smoother framerate, and online play.

Back then, I had to level up my Pokemon by actually playing the game. Today, I can level them up by wearing a pedometer as I go about my day-to-day tasks in real-life.

All the way back in 2000, we were waiting on Final Fantasy IX for the original PlayStation. Here in the future? We just got Final Fantasy XIII on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

What's that, past self? What's an Xbox, and how have there already been three hundred and sixty of them? Oh, you silly goose. Just wait until you hear about the Wii...
