Report: Xbox 360 Getting USB Storage Support
by Chris Faylor, Mar 18, 2010 11:30am PDTOwners of the Xbox 360 will soon be able to store and access system data (downloadable content, game saves, downloaded games) on USB storage devices, according to Joystiq--a move that will provide Xbox 360 users with much cheaper storage solutions than Microsoft's proprietary hard drives and memory cards.
"Increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices" led to the implementation, coming in "a 2010 Xbox 360 system update."
Going by the documentation, any compatible device must have at least 1GB of storage, with the Xbox 360 able to utilize up to 16GB. Each device will need to be specifically formatted--either partially or completely--to be used as an Xbox 360 storage device. Up to two devices can be used simultaneously for a maximum of 32GB of extra storage.
Peripheral maker Datel had previously accused Microsoft of monopolizing the Xbox 360 peripheral market after an Xbox 360 system update disabled support for Datel's cheaper (but unauthorized) MAX Memory Cards--a move it described as "nothing more than a pretext for forcing consumers to purchase [Microsoft's] own overpriced memory cards."

I really hate gamers, for so long we've dealt with people telling us games are for kids that we've collectively decided to act like pissy little children who throw tantrums anytime we don't get what we want AND a pony.
For fucks sake, I've got tons of old flash drives laying around, I'm going to start downloading demos to flash drives exclusively. Fuck, now I don't have to buy an overpriced hard drive because I've damn near filled up my stock 20 gig. Lastly, someone was talking about how now this is bad because they will kill the onboard memory and force the consumer to get USB drive. SO WHAT, OH NO, tell me they won't kill the 512MB of local storage when a 2gb flash drives costs 7.99!!! WHAT ROBBERY!
Some people will complain about anything and reword anything to just hate on something. I've been into computers since I was 5, I grew up on Win 3.1, win95, etc etc. I went through my stupid "microsoft is the devil" phase just like I went through a goth phase and a "fuck my parents" phase. Its called being a petulant child and I grew out of it.
So hate, hate away, make hate replies if it placates you into ignoring the real psychological issues causing you to hate an entity the same way teenagers hate authority figures (no reason). I will be making some portable drives out of a couple old laptop drives and loading them up with demos and making backup copies of the games I've purchased.

I think Joystiq is right on the money. With this change, you can buy a USB thumb drive, and format it as the console's storage memory (assuming you don't have the $$$ to shell out for a MS HDD.)
The beauty of it is that MS no longer has to include Flash memory in it's Arcade consoles, saving on costs.
So in essence, they're shifting the $5 or so it cost per console for the memory off to the consumer. Bloody brilliant. =P

Being able to have more than one game at a time installed on my 20 gig drive (13 gigs usable, lol) would be nice

Funny though, I have half a terabyte on my Wii, the one place I don't really need it :)

So I'm wondering if, once a USB drive is formatted for the 360, will it be easy to back up that information to a PC? Even if all I can do is take an image of the whole 360 partition that would be useful. Data storage devices are not 100% reliable, and since MS has still failed to enable cloud-based savefile copying I would really like to have backups of such things.

FINALLY A CLUE!
(If we can get verification on this, I would love it, as well as an estimate of when it might happen)
