Evening Reading: Skate 3!

by Brian Leahy, Mar 17, 2010 5:00pm PDT

So, the release date for Skate 3 was announced today: May 11th for the US. I'm extremely excited about this game. I was a big fan of the first two and the addition of a hardcore-mode with crazy, realistic physics sounds right up my alley.

The series has already had a great community spring up around posting trick videos. Just look at Goonskate! Even I made some videos!

Video game news is the best news!

Game of the Evening - Modifications:

Desert Combat (Battlefield 1942): "BF1942 with modern combat. Tanks, MLRS's, heli's, planes, the dreaded spawn point of the AC-130 - complete with base-rape weaponry! It was a blast only to be succeeded by the retail version of BF2!" (dedgecko)

  • On Monday night, I got an email from our marketing department asking us to do a fairly short project for a promotion that they were planning. We were aware that they had been planning it for about 4 months, but only vaguely and 4 months ago, we told them that we would need about a week to accommodate what we expected they would need. So, the email Monday night comes in and says that they need it done by Thursday morning for a non-movable deadline.

At this point, Diane quits because every project we've gotten from the marketing team in the last 2 years has either been given to us with not enough time to do it or with resistance at every bit of feedback that we've provided. We send back some emails telling them not gonna happen. They don't budge. Things get heated.

By Tuesday afternoon, things have gotten talked out to the point where myself and the remaining programmer on our team can work around the clock for the next 36 hours, drop some of the unnecessary stuff from their mock-up and probably make the deadline, which is great, because the show that we were going to announce the promotion on Friday said that they won't carry the segment if we don't have the promotion ready. Last night, I get done testing and release the code to our web servers, sending out an email to everyone announcing that we got it done on time.

Two hours later, I get an email from the marketing team with some text changes for the website that states that the promotion won't need to be announced for another two weeks.

Despite this, I still feel so stressed out from my job that I haven't slept yet even though I've had only 7 hours of restless sleep since Monday and i think I'm having real trouble coping with things mentally.
