Evening Reading: Completely New Nostalgia?

I've written about this before, but it amazes me every time I play a sequel like StarCraft II at the amount of nostalgia I feel while simultaneously feeling like everything is brand-new. The folks at Blizzard are masters of this. SCII makes me feel like it's 10 years ago and I'm playing the original game on dial-up, but it's a completely new experience at the same time.

I've also switched to Terran from Protoss in the beta. I got tired of getting rolled by Marine and Marauder rushes and Stalkers being underpowered. I miss my Dragoons.

Also, be sure to check out Garnett's God of War 3 review. Big day for the PSP today... and some other video games.

If gaming isn't your speed:

Game of the Evening - Modifications:

Team Fortress (Quake): "Truly groundbreaking and I'm still riding the wave from that game. We now have voice chat, squads and all these tools to help us work as a team in class based games. But man, when you were on a large server making runs for the flag there was an implicit understanding on what to do. No time to chat, so each member had to just know what to do at each moment. When it worked, it was a glorious moment. There were hundreds, maybe thousands of these moments from that game; from across the nation on dialup modems no less." (spazzium)

I'd say it's helpful for deciding who you want to spawn on in your squad, since isn't it impossible to what your squadmates are up against with kill-cam off?

It's rare that the kill-cam actually succeeds at revealing your killer's position.

            March 16, 2010 5:16 PM

You can tell how bad off your teammates are on the spawn minimap and decide whether you want to spawn on them or not.

Kill cam also can contribute to an offense being unsuccessful at winning offensively. It also tends to prevent going for the kill because of the potential of "retribution."

            • reply
              March 16, 2010 5:22 PM

How does it contribute to an offense being unsuccessful at winning offensively? Less tickets are wasted by spawning on a squadmate that is within seconds of being suddenly overwhelmed by defenders?

Are you afraid that it turns an attacker into a sniper in the hope of killing the sniper that got them? The only time I've seen this happen is if there's no one sniping on your team (or your team's snipers are just plain incompetent). I spawn as a sniper kill the snipers - then make a push and on the next spawn - change back to my assault class (recon; saiga + c4).

Not being able to see if your squad mate is about to die before you spawn on him is pretty annoying. Also, people act like as soon as they kill someone they're dead because the enemy will respawn and hunt them down when in reality it just doesn't happen that often. Besides, it can be difficult to figure out where someone is hiding through killcam.

I say turn it back on, if only for the squad spawning. But really, I think people play up the killcam WAAY too much and just need something to whine about.

          March 16, 2010 5:25 PM

i dont like not having it, simply due to the spawning and of course seeing how much dmg i did before i died. i'm more curious to why you want to disable it, its not like its all that useful in seeing where someone is half the time since its so focused on the player model and not the environment.

Also: 90% of folks on the servers who are less interested in taking objectives than they are finding the perfect camping spot - at least the kill cam encourages ppl to smoke out said spots.

Its designed to keep the game dynamic. It also counter-balances sniper camping and opposing team flanking behind the spawn (either attack or defense).

Most of all, I trust the devs put more thought into having turned on than other have into turning it off. Faith!

If you want to avoid snipe camping, then look at the damage indicator and go find them. Snipe camping is really not that effective. Most of the time it's best to just leave them as a detriment to their team....

My only problem is how inconsistent the game is with actually spotting things. If I am shooting someone, I should be able to spot them. It doesn't always work that well, though... I notice this especially on enemy choppers.

BC2 Conquest definitely suffers from the low number of players, but I'm still an old-school Battlefield fan at heart. Rush just seems to be way too stifling and constricted to me. I miss 64-player Conquest. Hopefully BF3 will bring that back.

            March 16, 2010 6:17 PM

From what I understand Conquest isn't conquest though. Its just TDM with a flag modifier for rate? In other words owning all flags without killing someone doesn't net you a thing.

            • reply
              March 16, 2010 6:30 PM

its a significant advantage to hold all the flags, for sure. As for not killing, well, you are always going to be killing. I have had the majority of large battle/epic situation around flags. Especially that snowy town map. Some crazy times there.

                March 16, 2010 6:37 PM

Its still not conquest though. Its an advantage no doubt, but mostly to the team with better death matchers. In theory the old style of requisition points slowly detracting from the other teams pool of tickets meant that a team that coordinated better yet perhaps had poorer FPS skils would be out the opponent. Its much murkier with this new system, I've found often that the losing team barely benefits from capping points, and the winning team can easily kick the shit out of the other team just by sitting on 1 point.

This problem is of course magnified by the difference in levels that is often apparent between two teams.

This does happen, and thats more of a team balancing issue. As for the change to conquest, I understand why they did it. It obviously will force less musical flags when its a low pop server, but yes, it has its own inherent weaknesses. That said, when the server is full, amazing times can be had distinct to that gamemode.

I agree I have more fun with conquest most of the time. I'm just saying its not at all like conquest mode in the old BFs and really feels more like team DM. The main reason its fun is the stratification of fights around the points, and the destructibility.

Huh then its so minute thats it really doesn't play a part. I have been told that the points act as a ticket multiplier, so a kill is worth 3 tickets if you have 3 points. Regardless at the moment it really is glorified deathmatch. Its still fun though, and I prefer it to rush, because so many of the rush maps have blatant problems.

Yesterday I tried to take down objectives with AT mines instead of C4 - AT mines stay when you die and any bullet or explosion will set them off. C4 disappear as soon as your respawn timer is up.

This being said, its harder because the deploy is slower and the blast radius is smaller. I didn't have much success :(
