Evening Reading: DLC and Price

Today, we ran a story about the first map pack for Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which will be released on March 30th for the Xbox 360 for $15. It will include 5 maps, two of which are returning arenas from Call of Duty 4. That's 25% of the full-game's price.

I can't think of any other DLC, save some Rock Band albums, that got up near the $15 mark. If it sells well, it could set a dangerous precedent. That same $15 got me Shadow Complex and Battlefield 1943. Hell, $20 got me Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost & Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.

All of this is moot for me, as I haven't played MW2 multiplayer since January. Too many hacks that went unfixed. Also, I have BFBC2 and SC2 beta (I switched to Terran and won 9 games in a row yesterday).

I think warcrow posts come in a couple of flavours:

          1) Hay guyz, look at this game I've got that you guyz don't!
          2) Hay guyz, this game I've got that you guyz don't is AWESOME!

Nothing against the guy personally, just some of his posts are like this.

      The first reviews are good.

      First pc review- 90
"4A Games leaves you no choice but to engage with the gameplay of Metro 2033 because of its dark tone and great story. Hardcore gamers looking for a unique experience in PC ultimately will be rewarded by this atmospheric and fast-paced shooter." -3DJuegos

      First 360 review- 90
"A brilliantly atmospheric shooter with forgivably imperfect gunplay. Stick with it." - Xbox World 360 Magazine UK

I also think those optimum requirements were not true. This is a quote from one of the developers
"The PC side definitely became more and more optimised as a side effect. For example we don't need as much system memory as other PC-only games. Anything above 512MB RAM with DX10/DX11 code-path on Windows 7 would be enough. DirectX9 uses system memory backing store for almost all GPU resources, so you should add around 256MB to avoid page-file swapping."

yeah, but he also talks how inefficient the PC is compared to the 360. and how it requires much bigger hardware. We will see.

        Anyone got it yet?

          March 15, 2010 5:15 PM

          It's not ineffecient. It's rendering a bazillion - yes, a bazillion - more effects. Read here: http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,706182/Exclusive-tech-interview-on-Metro-2033/News/

I don't think he was saying that 360 hardware is better tho. The pc version has many more effects. Here's a rough translation from the 3D Juego review about performance-
" With a Quad Core, 4 GB of RAM and GeForce GTX260, we have obtained outstanding performance with all visual options maximized, and even with DirectX 10 support the game responds very efficiently."

In one of the interviews the developer said that two cores would be enough also.

          March 15, 2010 5:26 PM

why? I think the game is going to be very different than Stalker. Here's a quote from the 360 gamer review-

"Blending the linear spectacle of Modern Warfare, the nightmare ambience of Bioshock, the resourced-stripped terror of Resident Evil and the verisimilitude of Russian dystopias, 4A Games has produced a truly unique title that stands completely apart from American, British or Japanese gaming sensibilities. A heavily scripted narrative-driven, set-piece-laden epic, Metro 2033 is a remarkable piece of interactive storytelling. But it’s greatest success is in redefining survival-horror, in the process positioning itself as one of the greatest examples of the genre"

Based on the review quote above: A brilliantly atmospheric shooter with forgivably imperfect gunplay.

Reminds me of the reviews for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I loved the setting, but couldn't get into the combat or movement at all. Shooting and killing things just wasn't enjoyable for me.

Did you ever try Stalker SoC with the 2009 complete mod? It made the feel of the combat easier and better for a lot of people. The new stalker Cop is also more forgiving and the feel of the combat is more refined.

Funny that they used that song (In the House / In a Heartbeat), seeing as how it's one of the songs that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Complete 2009 added as one of the handful of tracks that would play on the ambient world radios in the game.

Ooo... 4A Games was founded by people who split off from GSC Game World a year before the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, in particular Oles' Shiskovtsov and Oleksandr Maksimchuk, the programmers who worked on the development of X-Ray engine used in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

I just want to know if it is a corridor shooter or a open world shooter, form the videos it seems to be more of a cramped corridor shooter most of the times.

      • reply
        March 16, 2010 12:14 AM

        Okay, some impressions:

Feels like a corridor shooter so far but I think there are open-world moments as well. The beginning of the game is more scripted with moments for interaction but so far not enough of those for me to get a true feel for the heart of the game.

Some great music and ambiance as well as a very cool feel to the setting. Voice-acting is excellent so far and I'm intrigued by both the setting and story so far (not saying it's totally unique but combined with this unique setting and the story feels more compelling than it would somewhere else).

Graphics are very good but (imho) not exceptionally insane or anything like that. I did like the smoke in one of the pubs I sat down at (if it can really be called a pub). Amazing effect.

The shooting is, unfortunately, a bit wonky. It feels floaty and slightly insubstantial. That being said, that may be an intentional by-product of the developers trying to show the player how crummy the weapons are at this point in this setting (being homemade and repaired frequently). I'd like the weapons to feel more sharp and precise though. I'd subtract a point from any review score out of 10, for this slightly disappointing issue. Not a deal-breaker though, by any means.

I've played nowhere near enough yet to really give a better and/or fairer impression. I'm liking it so far and if I had to grade my experience up to this point in the game, I'd give it a solid B+/A-

Two other quick notes - I have it running at 2048x1152 on Very High settings using DX10 (using my Core i5, 4 gig RAM, Nvidia GeForce 275 with 1792 MB Ram) and it seems to run fairly to very smooth so far. The other thing to note is that the game doesn't offer Save Anywhere functionality but uses retarded checkpoints - perhaps a nod to the cross-platform release on 360s? :( Not a big deal but slightly annoying.
