Weekend Discussion: Burnout Paradise
by Chris Faylor, Mar 13, 2010 7:00am PSTGame Developers Conference 2010 is (mostly) over. Long live Game Developers Conference. It was a fun and interesting ride, even from way out here in my soggy little corner of northeast Indiana, but I'm ready to kick back and relax for a day or two.
You all have a good one, and do try to be safe. You know how I worry.

Pac Man Battle Royale: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EX6pj2U0jB8
It is four player Pac-Man deathmatch, a cross between Championship Edition and letting Pac Men (Pacmans?) eat other players if they get the power pellet. Possibly the most fun I had at the show.
What ever happened to that Dead Before Dawn mod for L4D1? Did it just wilt before the quality of the maps produced by Valve's talented (and paid) team?
Or is it still going to be/is released?

mass effect. everyone talked about how it could be done in 12-15 hours. i spent 35 on the bastard, and still left several sidequests on the table. ME2? "oh, it's shorter than the first." i'm 35 hours in and haven't even jumped through the omega 4 relay. god of war? 6-8 hours? took me 11.
either i suck at games, or i take my time and savor, or you guys are insane power gamers! seriously, every thread about game length usually has a consensus on "time played' that is 25-50% less than what i take. it can't be just me.

I waited in line 8 hours in College Station, TX when Episode 1 came out and in Austin for 2 and 3. Yeah they weren't as good but i still enjoyed the fuck out of them. The saber battles in all 3 movies were epic beyond belief. I love how in the 3rd movie Anakin destroys Count Doku within the first 15 minutes.
The final fight in episode is probably the 2nd best in the entire series closely behind the final fight in Return of the Jedi.
Yeah they had lots of problems and they were obviously not as good as the originals, but I enjoyed all 3 movies and I can still watch them today and enjoy the fuck out of them.

I also wonder if online DM is dead as well. Sure seems like it. I haven't played DM in like 5 years or since BF2 basically?

I have a Windows2003 server running with a share on it full of .mkv files, I currently stream this with my MacMini connected to my LCD TV.
I want to buy a PS3 and also want to be able to stream those .mkv files to my TV.
Anyone experience with this?

in Aliens vs Predator, the first one. what were the predators going to do down there if the humans didnt get there first? draw straws to see who got killed to hatch an alien? then the other two hunt it down? i mean, wtf?
surely they would have grabbed 5 or 6 people as hosts first. or dogs, or whatever pets they have on that planet.

I know this will not be a popular topic, but I'm noticing a trend. Whether it's intentional team stacking or not (I suspect it is just the natural way of things due to rage quits), one team tends to be half full of people who are at least level 25 (meaning you have all of the level based unlocks and also are very likely to have all of the class-based unlocks for your favorite classes), while the other tends to have 2-3 people maximum who fit into that category.
Right now, most Shackers are still trying to get to the good unlocks (I know I am since I had a week-long vacation starting the day after launch), so this situation is much more noticeable now than it will be a month from now. I don't really have a good solution to the problem, other than asking that the people who are level 25+ try to even out teams after a round where they completely steamroll the opposition. This should usually be pretty easy due to people rage quitting after such a round.
What say you, Shack masses?
