Evening Reading: My GDC Highlights

by Brian Leahy, Mar 12, 2010 5:00pm PST

As I fly back from the sideways rain of San Francisco to sunny Los Angeles, I thought I would reflect upon my personal highlights from GDC 2010. Undoubtedly, the best thing at GDC 2010 is this apple pie danish I am eating with a nice, hot cup of coffee, but enough about that.

My first night here took me to Capcom's Super Street Fighter IV fight club and launch party for SFIV iPhone. I got to interview Ono-san and Seth Killian, play some Super, and laugh as everyone finally met Hakan. He's hilarious.

Early the next morning, I saw a presentation for Civilization V and immediately kicked it up near the top of my most-anticipated list. The move to hexes and removal of stacks is very intriguing.

Finally, I took a brief break from work today to play some StarCraft II on the show floor against some random attendee. I won handily and felt bad. Matchmaking doesn't really work when you play this way. I had to swing back because the servers were down for today's patch the first time I went to play a game.

All in all, GDC was a much-more developer focused event this year. Last year, a lot of publishers used it as a news outlet, but this year it was all about the devs. Kudos to the organizers for this. It will make E3 that much more exciting later this year.

You'll notice I didn't list PlayStation Move as a highlight... yeah.
