Evening Reading: GDC Week

Unfortunately, Evening Reading for this week will be brief as I prepare and attend the 2010 Game Developers Conference. Your (newly) regularly scheduled ER content like Game of the Evening, links, and whatever random point I want to make will return next week.

Super Street Fighter IV fans: I'll be attending the SSFIV Fight Club at GDC tomorrow night. If you have any questions for Yoshinori Ono or anything you want me to test out in-game, let me know in the comments.

GG's this weekend on the Shack BFBC2 servers, most notably Chicago #69. Nerf mortars.

P you gotta get some sentries/zeal and tech to immortals, once you have a few you can stop an early push. Mid to late you need to get colossus.

Marines eat Immortals -- the overshield shield doesn't help, and immortals get a damage bonus against marines. Unless the terran is really slow, this won't repel the advance.

Plus protoss needs to end the game before terran gets ghosts. EMP pretty much counters *.protoss.

if you get a bunch of lings and morph 5-6 into banelings in his nat or near his base, then push early (~5 minutes maybe?), it can be very hard to deal with for terran, especially if he hasn't scouted your nest. As P I'm not sure exactly, but I know that early zealot pressure can be pretty bothersome, especially if you're clever about taking out his wall.

Mass Hydras have treated me well in almost any matchup. Probably just the way most people are playing these days are vulnerable to it, but with a few lings/roaches to supplement them, and i take out their army, and re-macro way faster/cheaper than they can.

I hope so... once they get that one balanced, then they can work on M/M/G... and after that they can work on the fast cloaked banshee follow up.

However they'll probably shave another 10 points off Zealot shields.

Yep, I guess I know what kiting means now, there's no chance for the Z to dance and while the Z isn't the best player, I mean the Zealots are just totally and utterly raped by the M's - there's literally nothing he could do except maybe 10 stalkers (but isn't the marauder a machine at taking down stalkers?)

The Zealots simply can't catch the Marauders, the guy is a Toss player, fired up human and on his first game managed to fuck the Toss up hard by building 10M's and kiting them against the Z's - the Z's were fucked completely, I think they got 3 hits in, in total.

You always have to temper what they say with how they play.

A week ago protoss players were doing a lot of proxy-rax builds, which would kill the opponent before they could mount much of a resistance. Also, the default terran strats were reaper + cc kill, marine + medivac, or turtle + bc tech. Factories and marauders were considered completely useless.

Reapers were nerfed. Protoss gateways and chronoboost were nerfed. I think marauders were even buffed somewhat.

so 7 melee units against 11 ranged units.. really at that point the protoss player should have had at least 1 sentry and a few stalkers. also, it looks like they're 8 minutes into the game, no reason his zealots couldn't have had charge.

I don't think they intended a zealot without charge to be the direct counter though, it's a tier 1 unit that hasn't been upgraded against a tier 2 unit

                                Marauders are tier 1.5(-ish -- Terran don't exactly have a real "1.5").

Beating mass marine/marauders requires extremely good sentry micro and placement + zealots, which is kinda silly for an attack-move blob of T1 units.

Protoss has stalkers and sentries at T1.5.

Zerg are the race that lack an anti-air unit in T2.

if you take 5 zealots with charge against 5 marauders, the zealots should win (both players of equal skill) but zealots are a cheaper unit so they should outnumber the marauders as well

They don't win. Slow more than negates the charge.

Plus charge is a stupid expensive (200/200) T2 upgrade on a building that doesn't give any additional units.

                                        Nope.

We're not talking about direct counters or anything like that. The standard 2:1 marine:marauder build completely destroys all of protoss tier 1, unless you can expertly position and micro sentries to prevent the kite. It's completely ridiculous.

The three ways to beat it w/o a lot of micro is proxy-rush (kill 'em before it's a problem), fast-tech void rays for a fast CC bust, or turtle + fast-tech colossus. Arguing this is Blizzard's intention is kinda rough, because it pretty much gives terran a free win at most levels of play.

actually, charge does make their regular movement speed faster, just tested it in game and an 18 second travel time from point A to point B was cut down to 14 seconds.

It's a beta, and we're still really early in it. There are going to be many, many significant shifts in power between the races from week to week. Either Blizzard will change things up with a patch, or people will discover builds and counters that nullify the OP unit.

People are still figuring out the game.

No, but it depends on how you interpret the in-game UI. Is it representative of how the game is supposed to work, or actually works?

Going by pure damage/armor types, what they list should work, but as the game stands medic+marine counter pretty much the entirety of protoss T1 and T2.

For the un-initiated the zealots up the top in the base are the counter to the marauders... lol

The guy who posted it is not happy!
Behold my amazing ability and micromanagement skills of

            Pressing A
Left-Clicking on the ground behind my units
Right-Clicking on the same spot immediately afterwards

And repeating, ad nauseum, until a wad of Zealots (more expensive in cost to the Marines that are firing upon them) are reduced to utter uselessness thanks to the Marauder snare.

Just destroyed a protoss. roach/zerg/baneling nydus in his base, after he tried warping a tiny army at my base. killed everything as it was warping in, hoped in the tube, workers raped.

he had a DT. why? I just burrowed my roaches, morphed the overlord, and boom. DTs seems like such a poor idea vs zerg, as its so quick to morph to overseer.

Being in makes it not so bad but I still remember how shit it was, at least if I knew "we only do waves in a batch, the accounts are all enabled at once" it'd make it easier

Not getting in to the second wave was harder than not getting in the first, big time.

That doesn't seem entirely fair, they could burst through anywhere. Surely having to ooze creep first would be not only more logical but balance it a bit?
Then again, what do I know, maybe it is fair now? Sounds potentially abusable though.

I will say the following about SC2.
Chrono boost, Queen and the M.U.L.E are all cool additions to the game.
The nydus worm is a great idea
I really like Protoss's build and walk away mechanic
I like Terrans lift of mechanic.

early in the games life all sorts of things will seem unbalanced, but it time i bet a lot of it will just be knowing how to counter them well. sure, some stuff will be rebalanced, but I hope they start with small, slow changes.

the thing is if you had to float an overlord all the way across the map undetected, then have him drop creep, then wait for the worm to build, then wait for dudes to unload it'd be pretty much worthless as a sneak attack device and only useful to transport dudes between your own expos.

                    March 8, 2010 7:44 PM

It takes something like 7.5 seconds to build on the regular speed people play on ("Faster") from when you first hear it, and when units unload out of it they unload sequentially not all at once giving you additional time before you're faced with a large army (though they do unload relatively quickly)

yes, if say there are a bunch of ranged units outside of my sight, but the worm would be in their range, they all open fire as soon as it goes down and splat, good by 100/100.

I can't find any information on when Blizzard started digital downloads for WoW:WotLK, but their press release (http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/press/pressreleases.html?081113 ) doesn't mention any availability on the Blizzard Store.
