Close to three years after releasing The Red Star on PlayStation 2, publisher XS Games has declared that the shooter / beat 'em up hybrid is headed to PSP and iPhone.

"Fresh visual polish and improved controls" are promised for the handheld editions, which will be available as digital downloads (via the PlayStation Store and iTunes App Store) sometime in the "early spring" timeframe. No word yet on price.

Based on Christian Gossett's graphical novel of the same name, The Red Star tells of an alternate Soviet Union that embraced mythical and magical weapons over nuclear power. The video game was originally in the works for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, though only the PlayStation 2 version made it to stores after developer Acclaim went bankrupt.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

Hrm, looks like I'll pick this up on PSP, the xbox version was a blast to play. Which is odd, since I played that one, but could never get my hands on the PS2 version....
