As we head into the weekend, it occurs to me that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is almost here. Sadly, we won't have one more weekend with the beta before Tuesday's release, but I'll take the time to reflect upon why I'm looking forward to this game in a big, big way.

Battlefield 2 was one of my all-time favorite games (ever). I used to play on the TacticalGamer servers, which required you to squad-up and have a microphone connected. Suffice to say, it fostered a good amount of teamwork and intense virtual battles. There were some especially good pilots that played on those servers.

Personally, I played as a medic and focused more on keeping my squad alive than getting as many kills as possible. It was a golden-age of PC FPS gaming. Men were men. PC games were PC games. The twelve year-olds were focused on Halo 2 on the Xbox. Times were good.

DICE's focus on PC gamers for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is encouraging. We keep dedicated servers, clan support, and an interface developed specifically for the PC version. Man, they even released a trailer detailing the PC specific features:

I wish EA and DICE a smooth launch and hope to see you all on the Battlefield on Tuesday! With that out of the way, let's get into the Game of the Evening. Another one of my favorite PC games ever:

Baldur's Gate 2 - "Sequel to a revolution in computer roleplaying games Baldur's Gate 2 boasts one of the longest completion times of any game in history. With more than a hundred hours even an incomplete game it seems Bioware's first ever sequel (and second ever sequel to this day) couldn't take "more" seriously enough. Released to critical acclaim and still remembered and played more than a decade from it's release Baldur's Gate 2 stands as shining example of giving people more than their money's worth." Do you folks like the "Read More" for Evening Reading?

TacticalGamer servers were amongst the few servers that actually played BF2 like it was supposed to be played. Commanders communicated orders to the squad leaders who communicate that order with their squadmates. It wasn't just simply go there, the squad leaders actually had specific details to go along with the general orders from the commanders. Pilots actually conducted support for the squads on the ground.

The skirmishes that would erupt from being in a squad and given an order from the commander to defend a base while an opposing squad tries to take it back is amazing.

Oh, and the fact that they forced you into squads and the command hierarchy was another thing I loved about their servers. If you were a total jackass, you usually didn't last long.

TacticalGamer still runs a BF2 server that mostly stays full. It runs the Project Reality mod.
