Original Fallout Co-Creator Liked Fallout 3; "Would Have Done Things Differently"
by Brian Leahy, Feb 22, 2010 5:30pm PSTIn an interview with Fallout fan site "Duck and Cover" Tim Cain, who co-created the original Fallout at Interplay, spoke about a number of topics, including his opinion on Bethesda's Fallout 3.
Cain, who left Interplay to found Troika games (Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines), had originally hoped to create a new Fallout title at the now-defunct studio. Unfortunately for him and the studio, Tim reveals that he "was hoping that Troika would get the license, but... were massively outbid [by Bethesda]."
When the chips fell, Todd Howard's team at Bethesda Softworks created what we now know as Fallout 3 and Mr. Cain, like many, played through the title:
I played and finished Fallout 3 as soon as it came out. I really enjoyed the game, and I think Bethesda's designers had really done their homework. The game showed they had a deep understanding and knowledge of the key aspects of the original games. I even replayed it a few times to see how I could have different experiences, and I had fun with that.
That's understandable as Fallout 3 is an excellent game. However, Cain is sure to follow up his praise by saying, "Of course, I would have done things differently if I had made it." The man giveth and the man taketh.
Cain is currently design director at Carbine Studios working on an unannounced MMORPG for publisher NCSoft.
