Weekend Discussion: Don't Stop Believin'
by Chris Faylor, Feb 20, 2010 8:40am PSTOh, hello there. Fancy seeing you round these parts. Why yes, I have been absent for a few days, thank you for noticing. No, nothing serious like that, just my lady friend's birthday. What? No, her name is not StarCraft II. That was just a ...coincidence. Yes.
Sorry to cut this short, old chum, but I simply must be on my way. Things to see, games to play, pies to steal, I'm sure you can relate. Do give my love to the children, would you?
Chatty: Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma
FileShack: Unity of Command, Skyjacker
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama
38 Studios, Harry Potter Kinect - Shacknews Daily: May 25, 2012
They look really good and are "entertaining" but fuck, they don't make any god damned sense. While watching any of them (except maybe the first, I remember liking it the best, but I don't really remember it totally), I get the distinct feeling that I'm missing a fuck ton of information that is vital to understanding the story. What a garbled mess this series is.
I don't even know where to begin to try and validate my point, but taking an example from the most recent film, at the end when Hans Gruber tells Harry he's the half blood prince is that supposed to be some "OMG WTF" moment? SO WHAT? The only thing the HBP did during the film was leave a cook book lying around with a bunch of annotations. WHO GIVES A SHIT. I can only assume in the books this reveal actually MEANS SOMETHING?
I don't know if it's the fault of the screen writer, script, or director, but this shit is all over the place to someone who's never read the books.

IT'S AMAZING!
Not really. Actually:
http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/02/20/semiaccurate-gets-some-gtx480-scores/
"The end result is that the GTX480 is simply not fast enough to deliver a resounding win in anything but the most contrived benchmark scenarios. It is well within range of a mildly upclocked HD5870, which is something that ATI can do pretty much on a whim. The GTX480 can barely beat the second fastest ATI card, and it doesn't have a chance at the top."
-"Both of our sources said that their cards were smoking hot. One said they measured it at 70C at idle on the 2D clock."
-"Getting back to the selective showings of the GTX480, there is a good reason for it. The performance is too close to the HD5870, so Nvidia will be forced to sell it at HD5870 prices, basically $400"
-On the Heaven benchmark the tessalation numbers were more than twice as fast as the Cypress HD5870, and will likely beat a dual chip Hemlock HD5970. However, the benchmark had many visible and quite noticeable glitches.
Grains of salt and all that, but man, sounds grim.

I watched a couple this weekend.
Zombieland: WTF? I thought this was supposed to be a funny movie with zombies. Turned out to be a shitty romantic comedy (that wasn't fucking funny, EVER) with almost no zombies. And the writing was mostly awkward and stupid. Blah. I did not like it at all.
Moon: Pretty decent, not the best movie ever but I enjoyed it. Sam Rockwell was kick ass, for sure. The actual story ended up feeling fairly MEH to me, but the acting, music & cinematography sort of made up for that and I would recommend this movie to other people.
So what did you watch this weekend?

:( - Trying to slide back into Clear Sky after playing Bioshock 2 is proving challenging
:D - Yakuza 3 in two weeks!
:( - Deadly Premonition comes out Tuesday and there's no way in hell I'll be able to beat Clear Sky before it comes out, let alone beat Deadly Premonition before Yakuza 3 comes out.

I have gotten in the habit of buying copies of books that I considered a big part of to my childhood, so that I can encourage my children to read them too by having them in the house. Examples (mostly aimed at elementary school age stuff here):
Calvin and Hobbes books (I have the anthology but it'll be easier for kids to read the paperbacks)
Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Giving Tree
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
Where the Wild Things Are
Does anyone else do this? What books have you bought for your kids in the hopes they'll read them like you did?

Per ImageOmega's post last night, I updated the VideoEmbedinator to fix problems with HD videos and generally refreshed the embed stuff to match how Youtube wants it to work now. One nice bonus is that you can go fullscreen from embedded videos now.

I'm updating the Chrome Extension stuff but don't look for a release of that just yet.

At least putting rough prototypes together is anyway. Once you get into debugging oddities, it actually ends up making it harder because of some of the proxy stuff, etc. But after an hour or so of messing around:

I installed windows 7 64 bit over the weekend, and when i view info about my computer, it confirms the 64 bit version is installed, but installed memory is at 4gb (2.75 gb usable).
When i go to resource monitor, 1281MB is showing as Hardware Reserved, and in dxdiag by graphics card is showing an extra gig of memory. wtf? Is this normal, or do I need to do some config wizardry?

First mod is to get some black/hyper black/black chrome wheels because I can't stand the stock silver ones. They'll I'll look into suspension/exhaust and start seeing what the normal engine mods are.

StarCraft is so good for great wins when you correctly scout your opponent and adjust to counter their build order. I had two such games: In reply:
