Doctored Final Fantasy 13 Screenshots 'Mistakenly' Released, Says Square Enix

The batch of Final Fantasy XIII screenshots released last Friday contained doctored images of the Xbox 360 version, publisher Square Enix has now confirmed.

Suspicions arose as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 screenshots were identical except for the control overlay, which reflected the control scheme of the appropriate console.

These particular images of the Xbox 360 version were created "for pre-production (non-promotional use only)" and "mistakenly" included, Square told Kotaku.

"This was obviously not intentional," representative Sonia Im explained on her Twitter, noting "we don't feel there is a need to enhance [Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360]."

A rundown of official comments on the matter follow, beginning with Im's tweets:

We are looking into how the #FFXIII altered screens ended up in our presskit &will update asap. This was obviously not intentional..

..Aside from easily being proven as altered, and this method not being one we use, we don't feel there is a need to enhance the X360 #FFXIII

Need to clarify a few things re: #FFXIII screenshots. These were not meant to be released as a comparison of FFXIII on the two consoles...

The X360 batch in our press kit was the wrong one. We will have a statement shortly.

As for that promised statement, it was given to Kotaku and follows below:

Unfortunately we did mistakenly include screenshots taken for pre-production (non-promotional use only) in our latest release of assets. Screenshots from the final game intended for the press kit will be released shortly. As shown in our recent demo tour and Microsoft's X10 event, there is no material difference between the two consoles.

Already available in Japan on PlayStation 3, the long-awaited, much-hyped role-playing game hits North America and Europe in PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 form on March 9.
