Weekend Discussion: Holiday Surprise
by Chris Faylor, Feb 13, 2010 8:40am PSTAfter being caught off-guard by the news a few days ago, it is my self-appointed duty to make sure you're not unaware--this weekend's a bit longer than usual due to holiday shenanigans, as Sunday is Valentine's Day and Monday is President's Day.
So get out there, have a good time, and try not to overdose on the candied hearts whist lamenting that there's still no readily available chocolate bust of Mr. Washington. Such a line of presidential-shaped chocolate heads would be the perfect gift for this time of the year, you know. They could even have yummy gummy brains. It's a no-brainer!

Some of you guys have heard me splurge over the Freespace series before, so after some people asked for it, I decided to do a big write-up about them over the weekend. Even if you’re not overly interested in Flight Sims, I suggest you take a look at these two (or three, I guess) games. If your curiosity ends up piqued, I recommend you pick up FS2 over at Good Old Games for $6 bucks and then get the Source Code Project files from Hard Light productions. There’s also a great editorial about FS2 and Volition there, as well.

Anyways, on to the writeups! I segmented the two write-ups into Freespace 1 (w/ STR) and Freespace 2, so you don’t get *GARNETT LEE’D* by my rambling WALLS OF TEXT. Since I’m most likely going to be post-rate-limited, I’ll put up something about getting the SCP tomorrow in a post bump.

This may be common knowledge to all but me, but I had to post it anyway.
In 2007, Steven Brust (the guy who wrote the Vlad Taltos book series) wrote a Firefly novel and released it for free:

How do you like these things? Me and Dave-A are having an argument about it. I think they make levels flat and boring, and make them look silly, I think they take any tactical decisionmaking out of your hands. In a real shooter, in FEAR, Max Payne, the early Rainbows, Far Cry and so on, hiding from enemy fire was a real skill. You actually had to make a plan, and understand how well the bad guys can see you behind this or that to avoid getting hit. It was a real skill and finesse in weaving through the geometry to kill some bad guys was something that was rewarded really well by the abovementioned games.
CliffyB disagrees apparently. I remember him discussing the cover system in GoW pre release interviews. It seems he thinks that using the environment is a banal thing that can be reduced to a single button push. On the contrary, I think cover systems are the banality - I never feel like I'm making any tactical decisions in a cover shooter game. Cover is a visual cue where the game is basically telling you "now move here, now shoot there..." - I don't actually think when I play these games. At least, not the way I think when I play FEAR. And because I know I haven't figured anything out, I don't feel as well rewarded for my success, and therefore I don't have as much fun.
What do you think?

Man, Remo...I know you're looking for exposure, but I think this might be leaning on a little bit on the reckless side dude.

Order anything for you SO this weekend?
Jen's out of town this weekend so I had one of those bouquets of chocolate sent to her at her parents place in Ottawa for today.
They started phoning her on Thursday and finally got a hold of her on Friday to tell her she had a Valentine's gift coming to her and to set up a delivery for SATURDAY.
Is this normal? I ask because when Jen emailed the place to tell them that she was disappointed that the surprise was ruined, the owner of the business emailed back (cc'ing me) to tell her that they're not in the business of surprises and that it was all my fault for not telling them that it should be a surprise. Apparently even when you order flowers they do the same thing unless they're the "foolish" few that don't.
Seriously, this can't be normal. An hour after I sent my contradicting email to this lady that said she takes customer service issues seriously I got an unannounced surprise Valentine's Day basket of cookies from Jen from some place else.
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

FANTASTIC.
Quick question. I've transitioned to the second portion of the game with the secondary map, and before I did so I made the choice to try and save my buddies at Mike's bar because let's face it they bailed me out of some dire scenarios and fuck me if I want to lose some cool mercenary friends as opposed to some pacifist clergy. Whatever. However, they all died anyway. Is there a way to keep them alive?

Tomorrow! How exciting!
To all those that are coming, reply here and I'll SM you my phone number or just send me your number I guess.
The film starts at 6:30 but in my experience you want to get there ASAP because there is not assigned seating!
Chazums + 1 are going to be in China town from 16:00.
I'm having lunch with a friend at 12 somewhere near Oxford street and will be available to meet up after that.
How about a quick meal in China town at about 5? Should give us time to eat and get to the cinema.

The story of a little boy, a book, and the on-line community we’ll never forget.
It’s a long story, but worth the read. The Shack is a truly incredible community.

The end game was well done, the story ended in a cool way, and this game gets way more hate than it should.
All in all it was super fun, solid, and good combat + awesome story.
I'd probably give it an 8/10. I did need a gamefaq open for some of it because you really do a lot of backtracking and I got lost a few times, but overall totally killer game.
