Morning Discussion

Harry the otter was named Mayor of Blinkton-upon-Cholmondeley yesterday after the plucky mammal pulled seven children from the burning wreck of their canoe. The move has delighted residents including Dave Brompton, 27, who told us "Flippin' 'eck! 'e eats fish! Raw! Tha's 'orrible! 'e finks 'e's Japanese people hurr hurr!" before yanking on the poor chap's luxurious tail. We promptly kicked Mr. Brompton, 27, in in the shin.

In other news, the DSiWare store continues to be mostly trouble for me, refusing to let me download Q-Games' Starship Patrol and giving a most unhelpful error message. I have bought the game, now please let me download it. Thanks in advance, DSiWare.

Looks like Chrome now supports Greasemonkey natively. Very cool.

I tried Chrome Gestures last night. The interface for modifying the gestures is absolutely wretched, and they didn't work at all after installation. No idea why and the interface put me off enough to not bother trying to fix them.

I know that there's a Smooth Gestures extension but Chrome Gestures was rated higher and if that's the best there is I'll stick with FireGestures, thanks.

The Chrome web dev tools are pretty awesome and I can't think of anything I did with Firebug that Chrome's tools don't.

The only thing I still turn to Firefox for is the CSS Edit Sidebar that's part of the web dev extension. I like it because it lets me make changes on the fly, then copy/ paste it back into my stylesheet.

if you have a javascript heavy page, firebug will update the html section in real time with page changes. The webkit inspector in chrome you have to close and re-open for it to reflect any changes.

It's because it looks ugly and I have to go an extra 50 pixels higher just to click on a tab, it's pointless.

those are really two separate complaints. chrome could have a titlebar and still put the tabs on top.

Without Tab Mix Plus and my fine control over tabs using the keyboard, I can't use any browser but FFox for more than a few minutes without getting frustrated.

If you're seriously asking, all of it.
Tab opening control, closing control, foreground or background control, tab ordering - the whole lot.
I have a specific set which I personally like (I clone netcaptor, my first tabbed browser) and it's pretty good.

For me I use it just so I can right click a tab and copy the url of it so I can paste it somewhere else. I do this many times a day in order processing.

For me Chrome has to do something amazing for me to switch. Not to knock it, because it is a great browser but Firefox does what I want already and I don't run into any issues, hence have no need to switch.

      Quick Q about Chrome

I just got it last evening to test the HTML5 video stuff. Is there some way (or some addon) where I can use my mouse scroll wheel to cycle through tabs?

FYI: Most of the Shack Greasemonkey scripts don't work in Chrome, hence the extension which now works with the mainstream version of Chrome without any command line switches or anything.

To run it, just download the file and Chrome should kick in and ask if you want to install it.

On the Mac side, Safari has spoiled me in one crucial way. Scrolling speed. Safari seesm to update the scrolling very fast and smooth at like 60fps. Chome and Firefox are much more chunky with an update interval of like 20-30 fps.

Especially on my magic mouse, since scrolling is more analog than the click-click-click of a scroll wheel. After using Safari a while it just feels painful.

Actually Firefox isn't bad. Only a tiny bit slower than Safari. But Chrome comes in last of the three.

Safari + GlimmerBlocker (which lets you do some limited Greasemonkey stuff) is awesome. No plugins, no bullshit, Safari updates don't break GlimmerBlocker, it is great.

Question for Firefox + Shack: Does anyone have a link to the script that moves the Shack up/down when you expand a thread to view a post? The thread expands but if it's big, the post always moves out of view.

Sorry, you misunderstood. It's not about thread navigation.

It's when I click a post that is lower down in a big thread, the entire thread expands, but Firefox doesn't focus on that post. Instead I have to scroll down every time to view the post I just opened.

Can anyone point me to a resource that explains what I have to do to get GM scripts to run on Chrome?

I know someone ported my FriendFoe script to the extension that ThomW setup, but I'm wondering what is involved so that *when* I update me scripts in the future, they are ready for chrome.

I need to write something up talking about the differences between Chrome and Firefox userscripts and why I'm not abandoning the extension now that userscripts are usable.

The shack and the way we override functions in GM isn't possible from the extension so there are some complicated issues when it comes to dthread and how it works.
