"The Battle of Forli," the first downloadable add-on for Assassin's Creed II, will hit PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on January 28, maker Ubisoft has tweeted.

Priced at 320 Microsoft Points ($4), "The Battle of Forli" add-on brings the titular scuffle into the historical action-adventure game. A second add-on, "Bonfire of the Vanities," is due in late February, packing more content and a new spring-jump move at $5.

As for the belated PC release of Assassin's Creed II, Ubisoft affirms it's still due out before the end of March 2010. The company also recently revealed that a "full price point" follow-up to the recently released game is due by the end of March 2011.

Why? It is extra content. Why should it be free on one platform and not on another.

Apparently, some people think that as long as content exists at the time of release, it should be free. Neglecting, of course, to notice that the game is easily worth the selling price without that content (which is likely cheaper than the console version anyway).

That's not fair. Games decrease in price over time, and Assassin's Creed 2 will be 3-4 months old by the time it comes out on the PC. Including some new content that's sold as DLC on the consoles is a reasonable way to keep the price attractive. Easier than making a bunch of PC-exclusive additions like they did last time for the same reason.

For me, if it does end up as separate DLC, and is already on sale before the game even comes out, that's a pretty strong encouragement to just wait for a GOTY edition and save some money. Especially since this would be Ubisoft's first foray into the world of DLC on PCs, and that's sure to mean some headaches.
