Postal 2 '1409X' Multiplayer Patch Released
by Chris Faylor, Jan 21, 2010 2:30pm PSTHighlighting the efforts of its dedicated fanbase, developer Running With Scissors has released a new multiplayer patch for its 2003 PC first-person shooter Postal 2.
Codenamed 1409X, the update packs new maps, bug fixes, new editor functions and the like. It's now available on FileShack in Windows and multiplatform flavors, alongside the free game client and an updated version of the Windows dedicated server. To detail exactly what's changed, the studio provided a 79-page .PDF.
The patch stems out of a collaboration between Running with Scissors' Jon Marcenant and "Mod Man Kamek," with the company also thanking the "various members of that storied game community" that "helped with ideas, testing and feedback, most notably Mr Downerup of www.downerup.com and Rob Myth from the DKT clan."

Not only was Postal 2 a great game that was sadly not noticed as an amazing social study (or message, whatever), but now the developer has worked with the community to make updates even though it's a very overlooked game. AWESOME. My opinion of Running with Scissors has raised even more, almost to the same level as valve.
For those who don't know the game, it's a first person shooter than can be completed without using any violence at all. Although most objectives are designed to be "go postal" type situations (hold up at a cash register, etc), you don't have to go postal to complete them. This is a game where you can set someone on fire, then piss on them to put it out, among other things. It was blasted by the media as being as violent as GTA despite this fact, and thus I've yet to see many people acknowledge the prograssive nature.
It sounds trivial to some, but when was the last time you played a violent video game where violence was only an OPTION, not required. GTA could be played without being violent, but you can't complete the game without violence. Fuck that peter mono-whatever Fable nonsense that has a very fake good and evil system, this games is the REAL DEAL when it comes to giving you choices. For fucks sake, you could do a sociology study on voilence in society just using the game alone. Tell people to play the game and complete the objectives as they want and see what happens.
