BioShock 2 PC Requirements, DRM Revealed

Update 2: Steam has once again updated its listing, now stating that a digital download of BioShock 2 sports a "5 machine activation limit," though maker 2K states "we are using SecuROM only as a disc check method for the retail copy of BioShock 2," adding that you won't need an internet connection to save single-player progress.
Update 3: Concluding DRMGate 2010, Steam has entirely removed the activation limit from its listing, while 2K's Elizabeth Tobey clarifies: "The Games for Windows Live key you get has 15 activations on it. If you reach 16, contacting Microsoft will get the key reset."
Original: The PC system requirements for BioShock 2 have been revealed by Steam, which also offers discounts and pre-order bonuses for the subaqueous sequel.
While BioShock 2 shares BioShock's use of SecuROM DRM, there's no indication that the sequel follows its decision to limit the number of installations. This proved a thorny issue for BioShock and the limit was quickly increased then ultimately removed.
Developed by 2K Marin and 2K Australia with multiplayer by Dark Sector developer Digital Extremes, BioShock 2 arrives for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 9, with a very impressive Special Edition on offer. Work on BioShock 2 downloadable content is already underway, with 2K Marin describing its plans as "pretty aggressive."

- Sound: 100% DirectX 9.0C compliant sound card or onboard sound
- OS: Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7
- DirectX: DirectX 9.0c

Other Requirements:
- Initial installation requires one-time internet connection.
- Ability to save game, earn achievements, receive title updates and online play requires log-in to Games for Windows LIVE.
- Software installations required including Microsoft Visual C++2008 Runtime Libraries, Games for Windows LIVE client, Games for Windows LIVE Client Patch, Sony DADC SecuROM, Microsoft DirectX.

Yet somehow in the end more often than not it's the legit customer that gets shafted one way or another.
I have many PC games that are 15 years old that have no copy protection whatsoever, and I can still play fine to this day on any computer. (barring any hardware/software retro-compatibility issues, but that's a different story). Take any game released today with online activation, Securom or any other protection scheme, will I still be able to play them in 10 years? Magic eight ball says: "looks hazy, but you're probably fucked - gotta have to buy the sucker again".
Call me a cheap ass, call me a lazy ass, but when I buy something I like it to just work, under any circumstances.
Games as services? Thanks but no.

I understand I'd be annoyed if those systems didn't allow me to play the game in ten years time, but as of right now, I just don't understand why there's so many "won't be buying this" posts all around the place.

A) You don't like the concept of activating your software
B) You believe SecuROM works like Starforce did with ring 0 drivers and whatnot (as far as I can tell it doesn't work this way)
C) You have been burned by SecuROM and have been told you cannot activate your software (i.e., installed too many times, or a false positive)
D) You are completely opposed to DRM at all

I'm not putting the laughably misnamed "SecuROM" on my computer. The statement from the publisher that it is only as a "disk check" is clearly false, since it is also infecting the digital version, which has no disk to check.
If Steam's own DRM isn't good enough for them, then I guess their game isn't good enough for me.

1) If you were a developer and there was a crowd of millions of people who doesn't believe in paying for things, would you honestly just sit there and do nothing? Wide spread theft isn't something that you can just look past and go "nah it's ok." I think is awful that people are blaming developers for trying to protect their property. I remember reading an article on torrent freak that put the number of pirates at over 350 million. How many people here would really just ignore that and open up their game to that kind of theft?
Apparently, people only care about playing games... They couldn't care less about the people who put years into developing them.
2) If you are going to say no to any game that uses some form of copy protection, then you might want to consider switching to console gaming.
Until every county gets proper anti piracy laws and starts cracking down on piracy sites, people here had better get used to copy protection. Here in America we are lucky to have a legal system that value's an individuals right to profit from their work, but the same cannot be said of other countries. Canada for example, or Europe.
Piracy is a disease which has corrupted the morality of many, many people. All of a sudden people have convinced themselves that if the internet makes it easy to steal something that makes it okay and anyone who tries to enforce copyright is violating your "rights" (lol).
So don't blame developers for things like this. Blame pirates. If you don't want securom in your games, stand up for developers.

I love Steam, but there needs to be healthy competition in the digital distribution market, and limiting the stores you can sell the game on just because the vast majority of potential customers want it tied to the current market leader is a rather short-sighted from a business point of view.

GFWL? I actually like it, quite honestly. My experience with it in DoW II and RE5 has been pretty decent.
My only gripes with GFWL are:
- My inability to use the 360 at the same time.
- How slow the fucking GUI is.

As for installing GFWL, I find that completely uncecessary, it's nothing more than bloatware. They're going quite a bit overboard to prevent pirating with that one.

A sequel to a game that already had DRM furore and was a bit of a let down, has even worse DRM and a plot that sounds entirely uninteresting anyway.
I wasn't going to pick it up anyway (thanks to the uninspiring plot), but this will probably ward me off even getting it in any sales too.
OTOH, I'll skip this one. Still haven't finished the first game yet.
But SecureROM _and_ GFWL? No buy for me. Thanks 2K for saving me $50!
