Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Jan 13, 2010 5:00am PSTA fine recent post on the ever-wonderful BLDGBLOG discusses freeform movement through internal urban spaces both in reality and the movie Die Hard. If you've ever loved--or loathed--crawling through vents, blasting through walls and seeking alternate routes, you might find the perspective interesting. Do be warned that it'll probably make you think about Deus Ex, which invariably leads to playing Deus Ex again.

Having owned multiple LCD screens, and a 37 inch LCD TV.. I have to say that this (and probably all other) plasma's have vastly superior image quality.
The colors really "pop" and the black levels are so much better than I could have even imagined. Jesus. Right after setting it up ejectorpod, my sister, and my sister's deadbeat bf (search my post history) all watched Star Trek (2009) on blu-ray. It looked fucking amazing.
My only complaint is that I could see some image retention after watching the movie letter boxed. After I noticed it I ran a break-in DVD all night.
Anyway, wow. Just fantastic.

In the case of watching a movie, you'd probably see the letterbox bars being a slightly different brightness than the area that was displaying the movie.
It's something that you typically don't notice whatsoever while actually watching stuff on the TV. The one exception I can think of is that I watched a movie and left it paused for a while as I did something else. This lit up the progress bar thing at the bottom of the screen, which left a little bit of that afterglow in the lower letterbox area when I hit play. In more extreme cases, like if you play the same game for several hours per day, sometimes you'll be able to see a little of the IR from HUD elements and stuff in solid color fields while watching shows. (again, temporarily)
I can be weird about my TVs and any kind of real burn-in would freak me out. Hell I hauled my TV back to the store two times because I found single dead pixels on the first two sets I got. But the temporary IR really doesn't bother me. Reason one is that it's an understood thing that I can expect and isn't a flaw, and the second reason is that I know it's only temporary and it doesn't really affect what I watch.
