Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Jan 11, 2010 5:00am PSTWith Monday dawning and the opportunity to slouch around playing video games in your pants all day now passed, we're left trying to sneak quick moments of video gaming into our workday. Of course here at Shacknews HQ we're professionals and might get to play Burnout over our lunchbreak but how do you manage not to work too much?
Are you a secret Solitaire player? Do you fiddle with your iPhone under your desk? A quick bash on your DS in the bogs? Share your work avoidance tips with your fellow Shackers this cold and dark Monday.

Turned on my computer this morning and it won't even post. The fans spin up and the screen comes out of sleep but doesn't display anything except blackness. None of the keyboard lights come on either.
Any idea what component is dead?

I wasn't a big fan the first time I watched the film. After giving it a second try, my opinion hasn't changed greatly, although I do have to say that the first hour or so really kicks ass! It's a shame that narrative problems drive the movie off the rails in the last hour and a half.
Those shots of Batman at night just standing on buildings and being awesome are really technically impressive. Nolan has a great sense for visual film making. Or maybe great taste in cinematographers. But there's some really beautiful stuff in that film. Nolan gets whatever it is that makes a cityscape mythic and visually compelling.

It works for the keyboard/mouse, but the DVI signal is completely dead. The box came with some strange DVI cables that wouldn't fit into my mac dvi adapter (but did fit into my PC card's DVI hole).
Anyway, anyone got any experience in this area?

Some dudes took Fallout 2 and added a persistent online component to it making it an MMO! Best thing is that it's free, it only requires a couple files from the original Fallout 2 (CD or downloaded version is fine). This game is VERY unforgiving, you die and you lose all of your inventory. There are ways to set up a tent to store your stuff or rent a hotel room but you won't have the money to do this early on. So yeah it can be frustrating! I never played UO but from what I read it does have that same brutal feeling and I like it.
I suggest running away from random encounter (shift clicking makes you run) because you'll get owned and stay away from any cities north of San Francisco (there is a map on the wiki) because they're lawless. Go to NCR where most people are and explore crafting, the manual explains it.

Since the last tournament is over with Lexicon's lurbriais legaments the victors (congrats drakky, chem, lex, peters, jimbov on dominating everyone).. here we go with my ultimate tourney:
AR EM 3 v 3 OF DOOM
Map default:
Forests of Caldavar. If teams agree, they can play wherever. If not, Forests time!
The tournament will take place this Saturday the 16th.
It will be single elimination.
If available, Spec slots have to be given to one of the following: xy, platinum, foxhawk, lexicon, or jimb0v as they all have proven to stream and do it well.
email me: ShackHON@gmail.com to submit your team.
I'll put up schedules once everyone commits (cutoff is Thursday morning) and the tournament winner will get 3 Steam games courtesy of kgargs(TM)!

It's kind of funny really, my first time breaking *nix system by messing with stuff I shouldn't, which I've heard is inevitable. I was unsuccessfully trying to update gcc with the instructions here http://hpc.sourceforge.net/ . I noticed that the instructions were having me put it in /usr/local/... while the old gcc was in /usr/... so I sudo cp -r'd all the folders it wanted me to put in /usr/local/. into /usr/. Apparently that was a bad idea and now it won't boot.
Will I be able to restore this without loosing all my stuff? I have backups, it'll just be a pain copying over and reinstalling things. Also, any advice on updating gcc in OSX 10.6?

We've opened a Steam group for Star Trek: Online Shackers. If you'd like to join please link your steam profile here, and we'll add you in.
This group is not for a ST:O Guild. You'll have to talk to Clay not really, we have no idea if you want that.

So I did it. I managed to run the Goofy Challenge, which was held in Disney World this weekend. A Half-Marathon (13.1 miles) on Saturday, and a full Marathon (26.2) on Sunday, 39.3 miles total. In sub-freezing temperatures too. There was sleet beating up our faces on Saturday, and heavier and colder winds on Sunday. It was so cold, the water stations handed us cups of slushees, since all the water & Powerade froze overnight. A couple of people wiped out slipping on the frozen ground.
I took it easy on Saturday, finishing the half in 1h53m. But I fucked something up in my leg, and I couldn't go all out on Sunday like I wanted to. Still managed 3h57m, with a lot of walking. But the medical guy thinks I have a stress fracture, which I'm getting checked out tomorrow.
Yes, I ran a marathon with a possible stress fracture. Go me.

What do you guys use for a backup solution on your home network? I have a bunch of things like all my music and documents and videos set up into nice folders on a 500 gig drive. I just bought a 1.5tb external and I would like to backup most my stuff. I really want the ability to do incremental or differential backups though were if i add stuff or change stuff in "watched" folders it adds or changes it in my backup. My old way was to manually copy stuff to dvds or whatever and I don't want to do that anymore.
So, since I'm sure EVERYONE now has backups, how do you do it. Shackers suggested syncback last night, any other options?

Random question...
Helicopter rotor blades?
What is the explanation to the eye when a helicopter is flying where it looks like the blades arn't even moving, because they're spinning so fast it fools the eye and looks like they are completely still ?

What a fucking abortion this show has become.
It was 2 hours of Claire sniveling and Peter acting emo and Samuel acting suspicious.
Tonight is the last chance this show has with me, then I'm done. If they don't do something drastic, I will never watch this show again.
What a stupid waste of fucking time last night was. Blegh.

I noticed the 3D looked a lot better in IMAX. In the regular theater the movement looked choppy in 3D so it was hard to see fast moving objects. I didn't notice this at all in IMAX. Is this why 3D TVs need to be 120Hz?

My Jasper system stopped reading discs (again!) so I arranged to send it back. However, I needed to get a coffin from my brother. Today, I went to box up my Jasper, so I put my Falcon unit, that has lain dormant in my office since April, in the living room, and BAM! RRoD.
Seriously, WTF is wrong with this generation of game systems?! Every one of my systems have shit themselves recently:
Xbox 360 (Jasper) - Won't read discs. Repaired under warranty once, broken again right ow with same issue
Xbox 360 (Falcon) - RRoD. Twice repaired under warranty. Replaced with Jasper because I couldn't trust it.
PS3 60GB - Won't read DVDs or PS2 games anymore. Out of warranty, may attempt to replace drive assembly myself.
Wii - Video output is dying. Has "screen-door" graphic glitching all over screen. Out of warranty, but I really don't play it enough to justify replacing it.
DS Lite - Hinge crack so bad Nintendo replaced the entire unit, barely one year after purchase.
To be honest, PS3 has been best of bunch for reliability, since it didn't start dying until after 3 years. But I never, EVER, had this much crap go wrong with any previous gen of consoles.
TL;DR All my shit's broke. I'm gonna play a game on my PC.
