Evening Reading: 3D 3D

Here's a fresh chatty for you all to enjoy on this Friday night. We've had our ups and we've had our downs, but it's been a pretty good first week to start off the new year. It will no doubt be remembered as vividly and with the same fondness as all the other first-weeks-of-the-year past. That is, not much at all.

The weekend is almost upon us. May yours be as fun and exciting as an endless stream of sharp news, snappy headlines, and witty comments from Faylor, Alice, Garnett, Jeff, and the rest of the Shack.

In case you missed it, here's a taste of all the fun and excitement we had today:

A friend was complaining that in the demo he couldn't see what was happening and it felt very button mashy. I don't get that feeling from people who've played the full game. Is the demo that different?

As was said before - the demo throws you into a later level in the game with a bunch of shit you were not "taught" how to use. The real game follows a typical upgrade and unlocking path in which you slowly learn how to do new shit and get practice.

The demo is actually the first and third (?) levels of the game. The big difference is you're invincible for the first two levels of the game. The first level is mostly an interactive prologue -- you kill shit (or not) while a voice over describes some of the setting for the world. This was the first level of the demo, and is a lot harder if you can actually die.

The third level comes after the tutorial "this is how combat works" part (which you're also invincible for), which helps get you into the combat a lot quicker.

I beat it this morning, and spent the day farming halos to get items.

Bayonetta is absolutely bonkers in ways that no game or movie or anime I can think of even comes close to. Even Devil May Cry 4, which was so very absurd in so many ways, doesn't even touch the total padded-room insanity of this game. I love it.

Picking up a 12 pack on the way home in a minute, and putting Darksiders aside to start this up tonight. :D :D :D

(<3 Darksiders, but I hear the screen tearing fix is coming real soon so might as well wait for that)

The tearing "issue", in my opinion, has really been blown out of proportion. It's there but it's not at all that bad.

I beat the game and just loved everything but the first hour. Such a fun game. :)

It was excellent wasn't it Kentot?

The story was confusing as shit, then I remembered that it was meant to be that way!

You're right about the controls and the demo (which did not blow me away at all).

Sorry I fucked up your name!

        iPhone fail...

Anyway: having now completed this I'm afraid to play Darksiders, Dante's Inferno, and others for fear they will frustrate me...

However I am tempted to fire up DMC4 and see if it can hold any charm compared to Bayonetta (I got bored in the castle area)...

most of those skills you can buy you probably wont use. Too busy mashing up combos to remember which button combo does which skill.

Just save your halos and buy yourself pearls/hearts or find them

Played the game through Chapter VI so far. The game just gets crazier and crazier! Its not a pushover, either. I was pretty good at Ninja Gaiden and the DMC games but the game is kicking my butt on Normal. I've been doing a lot better once I got started learning to dodge correctly and enter Witch Time.

Which version did you get? The Giant Bombcast covered it, and they said the PS3 version seemed to be behind in quality compared to the 360 version.

this game is ridiculously awesome on a grand scale. do not let your perceptions of perceived fan service from the clips you've seen make you miss out on at least trying this one.

I only played the demo, but do you eventually get used to all the things on the screen? I had difficulty telling what's going on. It seemed very "japanese" in that the game didn't put any importance on clarity.

I suck at these games. I really do. I had an amazing fucking time beating the shit out of the world. It got tough at parts, but i beat it. I don't beat most games. Then i replayed some levels a good 30 times. It's really neat.

Just beat the game tonight. It's amazingly, mind-blowingly epic. The game doesn't take itelf too seriously and kicks the action up non-stop. Not as unforgiving as Ninja Gaiden, control scheme is good. Great graphics and art design.

How does it compare to DMC?

That's my gold standard (especially 3 and 4).

without having finished it, I would say better than those; the next step (far beyond) DMC. And I LOVE DMC 1, 3, & 4.
