Evening Reading: 3D 3D
by Greg Mueller, Jan 08, 2010 5:00pm PSTHere's a fresh chatty for you all to enjoy on this Friday night. We've had our ups and we've had our downs, but it's been a pretty good first week to start off the new year. It will no doubt be remembered as vividly and with the same fondness as all the other first-weeks-of-the-year past. That is, not much at all.
The weekend is almost upon us. May yours be as fun and exciting as an endless stream of sharp news, snappy headlines, and witty comments from Faylor, Alice, Garnett, Jeff, and the rest of the Shack.
In case you missed it, here's a taste of all the fun and excitement we had today:
FileShack: Unity of Command, Skyjacker
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama
38 Studios, Harry Potter Kinect - Shacknews Daily: May 25, 2012
Minecraft for Xbox 360 dev working on 'Adventure' update
Demon's Souls servers extended again
Resident Evil: Chronicles HD Collection coming in June
Sony patent would interrupt gameplay to display ad
Weekend Confirmed 114 - Diablo 3, Max Payne 3, Lost Planet 3
New Zone of the Enders project underway
I made the Mediterranean Greek Vegetarian Lasagna that was linked here last week. I did NOT like it at all. I also made the brownies that multisync and his gf have been posting about for the past few days. They were incredible. I highly recommend them.

I went to the store a couple days later with the intent to pick up the ZW one, especially since I didn't expect the store I was going to to have the DB-01 in stock, but then I saw it in the display case and it squealed out my name.

It only causes tears of joy.

Tried some different compression/gate things this time. I think it worked out alright.

I need a simple program that will replicate all the files on our fileserver to a backup server, every night (differential is fine)
we have Symantec backup exec, but that puts all the files in a stupid backup exec compressed file, that you have to use backup exec to retore them. i just want the raw files and folders.
i know i could just write a quick script to do this but i would like something that can be scheduled, will verify the files were moved right, can do differential, incremental, and full backups etc...
budget is up to $1000 but i doubt something like this should cost that much but who knows.
help me shack!

If a planet's moon exploded (for whatever reason... asteroid impact, etc)... could the chunks remain in orbit around their planet, and what form would they take? A ring like Saturn? Also how large could these chunks be? I know some planetary rings are assumed to be exploded moons, but most of the ones I've heard about are dust. I want to know if the chunks could be larger. Big sky boulders basically.

HUGELY disappointed with that POS! Possibly the most unimaginative movie I've ever seen. I'm excited that the 3D tech exists, but please make a good movie with it now!

Alright, Bayonetta might be the best straight up action game I have ever played. Other than being utterly ridiculous in every way possible, the controls make perfect sense, but more importantly you feel like you're in control at all times.
Probably the thing that does it is how every combo is auto cancelled as soon as deviate from the combo, but instead of having some awkward pause, Bayonetta starts the next move immediately. Throw in the ability to continue combos after a dodge and a ridiculous variety of dodges and you can pretty much do whatever you want whenever you want.
Even if you found the demo a bit off putting, which I did, I'd recommend checking this game out.

Well now it is time to get another N router for an office and I'm having a hell of a time finding an N router that 1) works with DD-WRT and 2) Has external antennas.
I am open to suggestions and links to quality porn with red heads.

Dust 514
Console MMOFPS with no monthly fee (microtransactions) set in the EVE universe. Apparently the events in the game will influence EVE and players in EVE can hire players in Dust to do mercenary missions. This has potential to be really, really awesome.

As far as I can tell, the actual drivers get installed but not CCC. Well I fucking need CCC because for some idiotic reason these cards default to a bunch of overscan compensation over HDMI, so I've got a giant black border around my screen and a resized-to-shit image until I can change that setting.
I don't suppose any shackers are familiar with any of the 3rd party ATI tweakers and if they give you access to the overscan setting?

Yesterday I was at a friends house, he has a new shiny MacBook Pro runninng 10.6.2 - that's Snow Leopard right?
Anyway, I couldn't access other computers (running XP) that are on the same network. I want to get into their shared folders.
So I went to Sys Prefs, Networking, and filled the workgroup field on WINS tab.
Then I wanted to check the "Directory Acess" app under Utilities (this needs to be configured afaik) but I can't find it! Why it isn't there I have no idea :(

We're sending this initial email to let everyone know to update their email settings. We recently added a new tab on the settings page to allow you to do this.
We don't have immediate plans to start sending out emails, but we might send the occasional sweepstakes announcement or newsletter sometime soon. Of course you can unsubscribe from all of these if you so choose.
As always, feel free to Shack message me with any questions, comments, or suggestions.

I've been reading some books (five) by David Eddings altogether called The Belgariad. I love these and enjoy the refreshing humor in it when compared to other fantasy books. Who has read these books? What's your take on them?

Next week I'm going to South Africa to attend my brothers wedding, and as part of my best man's speech I think it would be a nice touch to have a few lines in Zulu. Just something simple like "good luck" or a "congratulations", but I can't find anywhere where it tells you how to pronounce the words.
Has anyone got any ideas where I might find some recordings or something? All I can find are textual phrase lists. I can understand phonetics if that helps.

I think I prefer them polished, without the black paint in the recessed areas (i.e. the last 2 pics).
I'm also looking at these 2010 GT500 replica wheels. I'd buy the real thing, but Ford wants ~ 1K per wheel, which is ridiculous. These wheels do fit on the 07-09 GT500. Front brake clearance was the issue in question, but they're good.

Shack, what do you think of these wheels? Which do you like better?

Not a USC fan by any means, but what a silly move. Maybe the whole thing going on with Reggie Bush and Joe McKnight pushed him over the edge.
